just had a look at richersounds.co.uk, wondering if these two combination here and here will be good for what i need, will probably have to connect sky box and ps3 via optical input dvd via coax.
Though the vision may not be the true future of man but it can't be completely beyond his control.

I recently got this package from Richer Sounds on offer for £250, think they usually sell it for £300. Over the moon with it. Don't know anything about the Hitachi, sorry.

Hi again bluedove, yes the Yamaha will be much better than the amps on these 'all in one kits' and should last you many years and it is also available on Amazon from Richer sounds.

The speaker kit is also good value and will give good sound.

If you decide to upgrade in the future the receiver will still be up to the job so the speakers will be the 1st items to upgrade (when money permits).

The Onkyo listed by StuHolmes also has a good amp and again the speakers could be upgraded at a later date to improve the sound.

I bought a £500 Sony receiver 11 years ago and it is still going strong, ok it hasn't got hdmi switching but it still does everything I ask of it. If you ever think you are short if an input or output there are always alternative ways to connect equipment up- as long as it has a selection of inputs/outputs. ( they dont have to be optical, co-axial is equally versatile, so with a selection of optical/co-axial/hdmi you should be sorted.)

I used to repair/install this sort of equipment and you should have seen some customers disappointment to find a cheap piece of kit only had one input.

With the original post in mind, did I need to order anything else with the LG system other than an Optical lead? I also ordered an extra HDMI lead just in case, was only cheap anyway.

Expected to get the system delivered in the next couple of days, hope I don't struggle connecting it up to Sky HD etc!

    Thanks for all the advice

Hi, it depends on how you want to connect everything up , some people would route all sound and picture through the amp and use the amp to switch between sources but this means you always have to have the amp on.

I route my pictures directly to the tv and only switch the different audio sources through the amp. meaning that if I just want to watch a program without surround sound etc I just switch off the amp. and listen to the normal tv sound.

I normally just use surround for movies, dvd's and 'special' programs but never bother with it for the likes of soaps etc.

It's just a personal choice which way to go

good news , Sky Atlantic is broadcasting some super programs that have 5.1 sound ect . Treme sounded out of this world.
Better in my pocket than theirs :rotfl:
