HDMI question re. TV and digibox

My parents have a Panasonic TV connected to a Sony hard drive recorder (digibox) with an HDMI cable. When the TV is switched on first and then the digibox is switched on second, it automatically switches from the TV picture to the digibox picture - great. However when the digibox is turned off, rather than return to the TV picture it just goes to a blank HDMI1 screen. Is that normal or can anything be done? I know they only have to press the TV input button on the remote control to get back to the TV picture, but it would confuse them less if they didn't have to.
Their blu-ray player switches back to TV automatically, but I think it may be because it is Panasonic brand (using Viera link?).
