Credit card debt liability following a death

Hi, I am new to this and hope my question is not inappropriate.

Following a cancer diagnosis, I am keen to know if my husband will be liable to pay off my credit card debts if I am unable to clear the cards in time. Total debt over 2 cards is £6000

I have no savings, but our house is in joint names and the mortgage is nearly paid off.

Many thanks

If the debts are entirely in your name then he is not liable.

Sorry to hear your news, hope it isn't as bad as you think.

I can bear pain myself, he said softly, but I couldna bear yours. That would take more strength than I have -

Is your house held as joint tenants or tenants in common.

the debt is owed by the estate of the deceased - and should be paid before the estate passes on to the beneficiaries. Worth getting proper advice on wills etc. to make sure you are both financially protected.

(sorry to write it rather impersonally - hope it works out OK)
loose does not rhyme with choose but lose does and is the word you meant to write.

Either way, the house could be used to pay the debts.

If TIC, then the share goes into the estate. If JT, then it passes by survivorship directly to the OP's husband but creditors could apply for a court order. This would seem unlikely given the amount, but knowing this they might nevertheless ask the husband to pay.

Best of luck to the OP.
