Some do some don't. My last insurers contacted the previous insurers to confirm the NCB entitlement. This years insurers have said they won't BUT I also don't need to send in my proof of my NCB, they are taking my word for it. Another BUT, if I make a claim I will need to prove my NCB at the time of the claim. Seems a stupid way of doing it but i'm not too bothered as I have my proof of NCB anyway.

I don't understand this either...so I could take out a policy and say I have 5 yrs NCB and not provide any proof. Then not claim and end up with 6 years (or 5 still if that is their maximum) stated NCB on the renewal letter to take somewhere else? Seems open to fraud as I have always been asked to provide evidence of my NCB. However my mum has a policy with LV and they also operate on the method similar to Aviva's.
  • I am in the same situation. I have 30 years of NCB, which used to be classed as 9, I renewed with Aviva last year and now have a document saying 5, so in effect 4 plus the full year with Aviva.

Their are arguments on here to say that it makes no difference. Obviously from people who are not with Aviva or similar companies, and who are not getting in quotes. I can assure you it really does make a difference and the insurers know it.

Someone said scam is an over used word. May be.I feel this is a scam as it is a trap designed to hoodwink you and limit free choice. At best it is sharp practice to get you to stay with Aviva. It limits your options considerably.

I shall try and contact the MSE team and get them to run the figures for themselves and see if they can prove unfair practice.

Just keep a copy of your previous renewal and submit that to your new Insurer too?
  • Mental note to self...........avoid Aviva in the future.

The extra years over 5 aren't worth much in %age discount. LV add 1% for a maximum of 5 years giving a amx NCD of 75%. At the end of the day it is the cost of the policy which matters.

My wife has 12 years NCD. Renewal quote £450, best online £350, Aviva (who only consider 5 of the 12) £195. The £155 saved will pay for the tax, service and MOT for a year.

We will keep all renewal notices should we wish to move to another company who apply more than 5 years discount.

In the event of a fault claim insurance companies still work on 5 years maximum. If you have a claim and you don't have protected NCD you will go back to 3 years.
