Refused Crisis Loan - Awaiting Benefit

Hello all, i applied for a Crisis Loan today and got refused because my debt is at £1,500 due to having budgeting loan, and crisis loanS from back in 2006, i have paid at least £200 of these off, but the j.centre seem to have no record.

Now i was on a training course, and was taken off due to being ill, and having no sick days left, now i was told by j.centre an appt would be booked for me to go back from new deal to jobseekers allowance, i waited for around a week for this to happen, then to phone up and told my claim had been closed, i asked why i was told because you didnt claim j.allowance after you finished your new deal due to illness, now i argued and was told to make a rapid-re claim and fill in a JSA5. with appt on monday to see someone at job centre was due to paid today, of course this didnt happen due to my claim being closed, phoned up today and got my rapid reclaim back up and running, now i told the man on the phone what had happened and he has a put a case note on the system, he also said it will be at least 14 days before any payment which is what i can understand, he said that i should phone crisis loans, i explained to him 1st time that my debt was high and that they wont accept me, he said they have to, as your waiting for new benefit, now currently i'm not very well and have been prescribed antibiotics, i have no food gas or electric, and looking at least 14 days before payment with no other resources available to me.

also not allowed emergency payment until the 14day directive has passed.

Any advice on what i should do?

What food do you have in the house ? There is normally a way to eek out a store cupboard when looked at a different way.

What do you need to cook with ? Gas or Electric ? Can you not use the emergency on the one that gives you food and manage without lights for now ?

I can't help you with the benefit part but might be able to help you with food ideas if you give me a rough list of what you do have.

They claim that Crisis Loans can't be appealed, but I pestered them and got mine through. I can't speak for whether you have a case as it was only my first. I may have to find this out too as I'm just claiming JSA so might have need to extend my Crisis Loan too...

You can ask for a review and if that doesnt work you can take it further.

Just keep appealing, in writing, however often they say no. Always look for someone higher than the person who replied to you and just keep at it, don't let them drag their heels either, request responses within a few days and if you don't have them chase it up straight away. Keep it up 'till you either have it, or don't need it anymore.

  • If you owe £1500 and you have no benefit in payment then you will not receive any payment from the social fund. Direction excludes I'm afraid.

It's possible to have paid off £200 and still have £1500 debt.

You can review, or appeal, but if you're over the £1500 there is not a jot anyone can do to change the outcome of the decision.

Go to your Jobcentre and ask them to provide you with a list of local charitable organisations who can provide you with food parcels etc until your benefit is paid.
