She doesn't want to burden any one person with the responsibility of getting cash for her all the time.

With Halifax passbook based accounts, she can authorise a third party to withdraw cash from her account.

Each time she wants someone else to make a withdrawal for her, she would fill in a form (that she gets from the bank) with the amount of money that she wants and the details of the person she wants to withdraw it, and hand it to them to take into the bank.

But an easier way would be to transfer money using telephone banking to the person who will get the money. They can then get the cash easily from an ATM from their own account.

In my old office the banks sent cash to a large office via SD over £250,000 a day
That would be sheer madness. I suspect they were pulling your leg if they told you this.

    pulling my leg?
I was the one handling them every day
£2500 per bag(or thereabouts) sent by SD (printed RM SD silver pouches which I assume were sent from various places)
we would occasionally get damaged bags and would have to count the cash(with a witness of course) and it would often actually exceed the £2500 compensation levels
had one with over £3k before
the delivery is done by a specific van with a safe in the back, non opening windows etc
when you go into do the delivery it has a double gate system so the van goes in and the first gates close behind
    then they run security checks
then the van goes forward to a loading bay where the bags are checked/signed

OK, £2,500 per item is reasonable as it is insured by the Royal Mail guaranteed (formerly Registered) delivery service. And it was clearly under contract as it was using designated secure vehicles, unlike "regular" items of guaranteed mail, which are often carried by ordinary Royal Mail vehicles. I stand corrected. :)

(Also apologies for subverting OP's thread :o)

its a regualr RM van on a regular RM route along with other items
the only difference is the safe and the likes of the windows(only RM vehicle I ever saw with AC!)
its only that one drop that makes it a bit different
the security outwith the safe is the same
thats why no mail should be carried in the front of RM vehicles

Many thanks for all the contributions, even the subversive ones (nothing wrong with that :-).

Friends does look like the best option. It seems the banks don't want to be bothered even though I understand there are a lot of people in this position. Thank goodness for the Big Society!

    Q. Can I control where my child/Companion Card holder is able to spend the funds?
No. It is just like giving them cash – once you give it to them they can do what they like with it. You can, however, view their statement online, 24/7.

So - "It is just like giving them cash "
