64bit vs 32bit

Hey -

I installed some software called TuneUp 2007 for fxing up my Windows, and it recommended that I switch to 64bit ..

What are the benefits of doing so and how can I do it?

Also I'm soon getting Vista, so do I need to buy a special 64bit version?

Thanks and Merry Crimbo!

  • First question would be to ask if you have a 64-Bit capable CPU?

At the moment theres no point at all as theres very little uses 64-bit technology. Best to wait a few mnths/year

The benefits of a 64bit CPU running a 64bit OS is the obvious speed boost, the instructions / data are double the length per cycle so in very basic theory you can pump twice as much data through the CPU. In fact it isn't anything like twice as fast but the difference is significant.

Vista is a waste of time (that goes for the 32bit and 64bit editions), the only _good_ 64bit OS at the moment is Linux, https://www.opensuse.org does a good 64bit edition.

You computer is 64bit if you have any of the following processors (this isn't a definitive list) :
    Athlon 64
    Turion 64
Sempron (most of these, not all)
    Intel Core 2
    Newer Intel Xeon CPUs

A few late Celerons Pentium 4's also have this ability
Windows is the path to the darkside...Windows leads to Blue Screen. Blue Screen leads to downtime. Downtime leads to suffering...I sense much Windows in you.
