Hi,
I have just bought a Sony Ericsson P990i which comes with built in Wi-fi and Bluettooth.
I usually use Bluettooth to synchronize it with my PC. Is it possible to make a small local network between my desktop and this P990i smartphone so that I am able to surf internet on my P990i without using WAP. (Is it possible over bluetooth to share my internet connection (between PC) and my mobile phone)
If yes what equipment will i need and what method should i adapt to achieve this effeciently.
If anyone has used P990i before and have used GPS /Navigation / WIFI or anyother special functionality do let me know as I am really curious to benifit from it as much as possible.
Many Thanks

yes that is possible.
get a wifi adapter, set it up on your computer then connect the p990i to the adapter0 -
Seasons Greetings!
I have a Nokia 9500 which also has Wi-Fi capability (and bluetooth), so I have wondered the same things and got the T shirt to an extent!
Your P990i will be aware of any visible 'Wi-Fi internet access points' within range. IMHO your P990i will NOT need a Wi-Fi adapter because the Wi-Fi network adaptor is built in. What it WILL need is an available Wireless network i.e. you will need a wireless router if you don't already have one as part of your ISP package.
On my 9500, with an available network in range, a little 'W' shows in the corner of the screen which then is 'boxed in' if I have decided to connect to it. I am not sure the icons are quite as sophisticated on the P990i. However, one of the 'benefits' on the P990i seems to be that it can swap from one type of connection to the other fairly seamlessly depending on the best available. Personally I would not see it as any benefit at all if my 9500 started using any intenet connection at all unless it was free:)
So, if you have a wireless router with your home pc internet setup, then yes it should always be straightforward to connect your P990i to the internet using Wi-Fi instead of WAP. This also applies of course when you are out and about too - you'll be able to connect using Wi-Fi hotspots set up in airports shopping centres hotels etc (but in those cases it's frequently not free).
Have you read the relevant bits of the user guide? You can download it at http://www.sonyericsson.com/downloads/P990i__UG_R3a_EN.pdf
A quick scan of the guide suggests that on the P990i, you need to set up a fresh internet account within the 'Internet Group Account' for each Wireless LAN that you plan to use. See pages 101-120.
If you do NOT have a wireless router already, it seems all is not lost today. It also seems possible to connect a P990i to the Internet via Bluetooth PAN i.e. via a Bluetooth connection to a PC which is already connected to the internet. I would guess that the only reason anyone would use that instead of WiFi in the home, would be if you had no Wireless router but you do have a bluetooth PC already connected to the Internet.
I just read (in the P990i user guide) that in France you are only allowed to use Wireless LAN indoors:D ... not sure how you stop it escaping!
As for GPS, I imagine the P990i is a bit like my Nokia 9500 - you'll probably need to buy a separate and expensive GPS module (something to receive and interpret GPS signals) and some phone software to create the maps from it. Probably cheaper and easier to buy a cheap standalone GPS! There is nothing in the user guide about it.
Good luck!
Edit: Reading gaming_guy's suggestion again, he might be suggesting that you can set up a rudimentary WiFi connection between the PC and the P990i without a router i.e. between two wireless network adapters only (the one built into the phone and a separate one you might buy for the PC). I think it would be extremely fiddly to get something like that to work and I am not convinced. A wireless router is the standard method, I think, and the one that will be assumed in the User Guide.
But if WiFi is not an option in any form today, then Bluetooth PAN might be!0 -
Thanks for so much efforts.
I have bluetooth connection to my PC and thats what I am thinking of. Bluetooth PAN. My PC is connected to Broadband. Is it possible to use BLUEtooth PAN to connect to internet through my PC so I wont be charged. I dont want to use wireless router as I dont have one.
Any suggestions on that!!!0
