Well we went to view this property today what a state! The carpets all needed replacing (in the master bedroom, the carpet had a piece missing and they'd half filled the gap with a completely different colour/style of carpet. The kitchen needed ripping out and replacing and the bathroom too. It was the worst rental house I'd ever seen. We asked whether there were plans to redecorate and were told not.

The letting agent seemed shocked when we asked about the possibility of redecorating/carpeting but after talking it through since living, it would cost us far too much to better the owners house and frankly it's not us that should have to do it.

We've since seen another property online for the same price on a 2-4 year old estate so will be going to view that as soon as we can get an appointment :)

You can do all kinds of things. A longer term for a reduced rent, lower rent but you'll redecorate, move in quickly at a reduced price etc. Put the numbers together so you can show how it makes sense as some landlords are not the sharpest tools in the box.

Thanks, yeah, we thought about all of that. We thought that if we were to do the work, it would show the landlord that we wanted to stick around but in all honesty, we only want somewhere for 2 years tops while we look to buy so I don't think it's a good move to spend hundreds/thousands of pounds redecorating an entire house for the landlord to benefit just because he couldn't be bothered to do it.

The houses we've since seen on the Internet are in much better condition from the photos so hopefully we'll be viewing them soon. We've also got a meeting on Monday with the landlady of a house that would be perfect for us as there's the opportunity to buy the house after a couple of years so we'll see what happens :)

Just come back from a week in Cyprus. I met a Scottish lady who lives there and has done for a while.

A friend back in UK wanted to move there for a long period, and asked this lady to help him find and negotiate a flat/apartment - since she knows the 'lie of the land'.

She found a property that fitted the bill. Visited it. Had been empty for quite a while. Negotiated a rent of €490 a month. Bang on what was required.

Friend flew to Cyprus. Met with landlord. Landlord wouldn't accept a penny less than €950 a month! Kept saying that the €490 is the 'fair' rent but he has no choice but to charge €950 in order to get back the lost rent over the last few years when it was empty!

That was almost 2 years ago, and property remains empty!

If this mentality comes from 'Greek' origins then maybe there is some guidance on why Greece is financially in the 'Mousaka'.

I think that here is a classic example of a racistic comment. First of all Cyprus is a different state from Greece. Greece is in financial difficulty (as i remember UK was as well in the past and lets hope will not be in the future) but Cyprus is not!!!
The behaviour of a citizen doesn't characterize the nation he is citizen of, otherwise i have plenty of examples for any characterizations i can give for British (who might come from irish or scottish or welsh or....) as the other poster did!!!

    Thank you very much
  • Hi, me again. Such a shame that property was a state.
I remember the first place we went to see; it stank, the kiddies were drawing all over the Walls, the kitchen looked like a bomb had hot it, etc... completely sympathise.
Oh anyway, just to let you know, the flat we're renting was only built in 2007 and we still haggled so hopefully that'll be the case for you. Good luck on your rental hunt. :)
