Posted something as a "large letter" but was probably a "packet":(

They could make it into a game, if it touches the sides it buzzes and you have to pay extra.
As a more serious question, is the large letter size based on anything or did they just make it up?
Large Letter is based on very specific dimensions and there is a thingy at the Post Office that you're supposed to you to make sure it qualifies. If it's too big to go through without effort then it becomes a small packet.
If this package had to be squeezed to go through the slot there is a very good chance a fee will be payable by the recipient

I know what the dimensions are, I was asking if they themselves were based on anything, you could fit 2-3 at a time through most letterboxes so they could stand to be thicker.Large Letter is based on very specific dimensions and there is a thingy at the Post Office that you're supposed to you to make sure it qualifies. My PO does this very thoroughly, and tbh I usually err on the side of caution and send SP even when it might go through the LL slot. The PO person will usually check - and they do downgrade the odd item - but they are very strict. Once, when I asked for LL, they checked it and decided it was SP - it was pretty much obvious actually."Well, it's election year, Bill, we'd rather people didn't exercise common sense..." - Jed Bartlet, The West Wing, season 4

Our NCT (National Childbirth Trust) fell foul of this... After a sale they sent all the seller's tickets back in an envelope and in many cases thus made the envelope over 25 mm thick. People got a card and had to go to the sorting office to collect and pay a pound excess. The trust did offer to reimburse people though. Of course if they'd divided the tickets into two or three piles there wouldn't have been a problem.
My post office say there is a conveyor belt with a sensor or wire or something above it that sounds an alarm if something is too thick.0
