Cost of removal company - what to expect

I'm moving from a large 1st floor 2 bed (with lots of stuff, more like a 3-bed really) into another 1st floor apartment which is only 0.3 miles away from where I currently live.

Right now my lowest quote is 220 all inclusive for a removal firm to come out with a Luton van and a 2 man crew - but I would need to book asap. The firm will not pack/unpack personal belongings, cutlery etc. Does this amount sound about right? (I'm in central Scotland if that makes any difference.)

We were thinking of renting a van and doing it ourselves, but would also need someone to help with carrying the heavier items, so I don't think it makes much sense.

sounds about right to me - last time I moved a short distance we did the same, this was 7 years ago and it cost me over £150 then.

Sounds like a bargain. I paid £300 cash-in-hand for removal from a 2-bed-flat in London out to Berkshire about 4 years ago.

The properties are only 0.3 miles apart though - so the mileage is minimal :-) The firm asked for payment in cash on the day as well.

yes but the van can't be booked for anything else that day because you have it, and you're paying for the labour costs of the 2 men as well.

have you looked in the classified ads in your local newspapers or freesheets?

I will probably just go ahead and book. It just seemed quite a lot for 1/2 days work, they thought it would only take the morning so the van is not needed for more than 1/2 day.

Just be aware of their reputation or try to check it out. A friend of mine was burgled the day after she moved in. The removal company (which was very reputable) had subcontracted to a couple of guys with a van. My friend saw one of them fiddling at a window but didn't pay any attention to it. This was the window she was burgled through and conveniently the lock had been left open. A small TV also went missing in the move. So just watch out.
