Hi all, I have dealt with currencies direct in the past, for transferring money to EU and also has currency converter. Quite easy to transfer especially if you have a fax

First thing to remember is that currency rates change by the hour, so downloading a chart will very quickly become out of date.

If you are any good with Microsoft Excel you can put together a spreadsheet using *.iqy internet queries. This will update itself and you can link other workbooks into it.

I always use https://www.xe.com, as mentioned above. They don't have 'buy' and 'sell' rates, which worried me at first, but their rate is usually very very close to the one my credit card processor uses.

    And finally....

If you need to exchange moderate amounts of currency - check out your local Post Office. Although their rates may not be the best, there is NO COMMISSION and NO FEES.

TRY THIS AS I FOUND IT REALLY USEFUL. ONCE YOU'CE SHOPPED AROUND & FOUND ALL THE VARIOUS DEALS, THIS ALLOWS YOU TO WORK OUT WHICH COMPANY WILL BENEFIT YOU THE MOST.

Further to Benji's post, I've found that the rates in Marks & Spencer are better than the Post Office (and they don't charge commission either)... when I last bought euros on Dec 3rd M & S were 1.4010 to 1.3850 at the Post Office.

  • Best is to get it from the horse's mouth - https://www.reuters.co.uk gives the mid-rates to you, so you know exactly how much your bank or money changer is making off you. Go to the currencies link on this web page.

As somebody else has rightly pointed out, these figures change dynamically, so keep in mind that the relevance of something you've looked up will diminish with time, and become irrelevant in a matter of minutes in some cases.

  • I reckon the best free site for FX rates is https://www.fxstreet.com
Not only do you get the streaming second by second rates, but you can look up graphs in any format of any pairs of currencies, and historical rates. Often you get a bill with an exchange rate quoted for some past date. If you want to check it, this site lets you. If you are interested in FX and future rates the information and expert opinions are worth a read. Just click on all the options on the side panel and see what is available.

In the 1980's I was a foreign exchange trader in London. We used to pay a fortune, I mean £000's per month, for less information than this site now provides free!
