Breach of Trust

Hello,
I've recently found out that my bank manager, or rather my account manager has been discussing my bank details, the amount I have in the bank account etc with a collegue of mine.
Apparently they live quite close to each other and their children go to the same football club.
I'm very angry about this and want to know what I can do.
Thanks

:O
That cant be right...?? (name of bank?)
if thats the case... this is a massive breach of Data protection act surely ?• HSBC (Main A/C)
• Halifax Back up A/C
• Lloyds (Spending) A/C
• RBS Back up A/C
• Barclays Old A/C
• Nationwide Old A/C0 -
If you have proof of this you should make a formal complaint in writing to both the bank and the information commissioner. It's a serious allegation, make sure you have sufficient proof first.0

Blimey. I'd be totally livid as well. Lith and pmduk are both spot-on - it goes against everything that the Data Protection Act and professionalism in general stand for. But you do need some sort of credible proof as the manager will deny it to the hilt.
I wonder how many other of the fellow's clients have had their business affairs discussed? Regardless of proof though, I'd probably be looking to move my account to another bank.
Sorry this has happened to you TB1. Best wishes. x0 -
Complain to a central complaints team, not the branch.
Highlight what information has been discussed, if your friend has told you.
The likely outcome for you is a modest amount of compensation. The bank manager may be looking for a new career as a result of this.0 -
Thanks for your replies.
I'm not sure how I go about getting proof without talking to my collegue and asking him directly what she's (she=bank) been discussing with him (him=collegue).
I know he knows as he keeps dropping hints about my finances and has in a round about sort of way told me she's been discussing my accounts with him as they both help run the kids football team. So far I've totally ignored it as if I don't know what he's on about.
I've been with the bank for 20 years (yes I know Martin would say I should've changed a long time ago) and until now have been happy with them. I don't want to make a big stink as then I'm sure more of my personal details will be made 'public'.
Any ideas?0 -
1. Do nothing and put up with it.Any ideas?
2. Complain.
3. Move your accounts elsewhere.0 -

I am no expert in the law but I very much doubt that this would be considered as proof. May be your college is making some intelligent assumptions about your finanical affairs and is trying to wind you up.
Why would the person at the bank risk their job just bescause of such an aquantance!
What is the name you have been happy with for 20 years?0 -
Ask the friend. If he's a true friend he will happily provide the info. Then complain to the bank.
Ask your manager for their manager's details (they cannot refuse) then simply write a detailed letter. Alternatively you could try central complaints team as someone previously suggested, but they may redirect you to branch / person's line manager in the first instance. Before you ask, yes, I work for a bank, but no, I didn't get a bonus!0 -
For proof, thats quite straightforward, if he is a bank manager then he should work at one or a cluster of branches and will have accessed your account using one of the banks terminals.
The bank should be able to search audit records for your account, to see who and when someone has accessed your account and indeed if and when this manager did.
I'd complaint, as it is a breach of your data protection, and your personal information.
Its reportable to the information commissioners office so the bank will take it very seriously as it is a risk, you may even touch for a GOGW payment0
