MP3 Walkman problem

My wife's MP3 player (SonyNWZ-A729) will not play or recognise files.
My Windows laptop shows that the drive has used space but is empty when I open up the folder.
Her Macbook recognises all MP3s and will play them when double clicked.
Any help welcome.

Maybe time for a firmware update? Back up any files first though, on the Macbook if it's the only machine that can see them, hope that helps?0 -
transfer the files onto the MAC, disconnect from the walkman, an then format the walkman using the inbuilt format, try the mp3 back on the player.
depending on size of the walkman, upto 4gb it should be fat32, or maybe some default setting on the walkman got corrupt and the format would wipe the hidden file and replace it fixing the error.0 -

Couldn't agree more.
I highly recommend backing up the music files on the Walkman ASAP before the situation gets worse.
At this point you can be all smug and say that the files are already on the PC and backed up, I won't mind

I tried the firmware update but it failed twice.
Interestingly, the mp3s will play on my stereo via the usb connect with stereo selecting the tracks but not via headphone socket cos walkman cant see files.
I'll try the format route and see if that works0 -
Aargh!
Copied the mp3s to a folder on the mac, formatted the walkman, and when I went back to the mac there were no files in the folder! I rarely touch my wife's mac and now I've lost all the tunes I doubt if I'll be let near it again.
Anyway the walkman now takes new mp3s and plays them but my wife will have to start a new collection.
Thanks to those who replied.0 -
Try Recuva on the walkman:

Or Photorec

Have you used Spotlight or the find function to search for any mp3s on her computer. Stuff can end up in strange places on macs when you think it should be obvious. There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -
sorry to hear about the loss of the MP3's from the walkman to the mac, however i'm glad that its now working properly again, I would suggest that before you MOVE the mp3s from the pc or mac onto the walkman you burn the MP3's as data to a DVD-R/+R or if you have an external drive copy them to that as a backup. then you shouldnt need to download the mp3's again. I've got around 30 DVD+r of my music collection, done when the price of dvd-r where cheaper. now with the price of hdd coming down, cheaper to get an external hdd.0
