Second Chance offer

Options
i was just bidding on an item. item ended a couple of minutes ago and another bidder won. then about 2 minutes later i get offered to buy this item for what was my maximum bid...

i might just be over-suspicious, but all just seems a bit fishy to me... was this winnng bidder just pushing up the original price?
and if they were so eager to bid on it so many times, why 1 minute after winning it would they withdraw or whatever?

  • It is probably an item that the seller has more than one of. Obviously if it is a second hand/specific type item that wouldn't be the case. Often if you have a gut instinct that something isn't right on ebay with further investigations you are proved right. Better safe than sorry.

Why not ask the seller? It may be they have more than 1 of the item, I often offer second chances and incude a note that this another item the same. Their buyer may have pulled out or they may not want to sell to the highest bidder. If you're still interested in the item I would email and ask. Also check their feedback.

Well I know this has started but I bid on an item today and have had a message from another seller trying to sell me their item (identical item). How did they know I'd bid?
  • I often send out second chance offers if I have lots of the same thing to sell.

For a seller, the best way to find out how much something will sell for is to put it up for auction and let the market decide. I then ususally send a second chance offer, with a note that I will be relisting others with a Buy It Now price of slightly more but wanted to give them a first refusal.

Dont be suspicious if it is something new that the seller may have lots of, but if it is second hand, perhaps more so.

If you are suspicious of shill-bidding, have a look at the sellers completed listings and see if the winning bidder this time has been a repeat bidder in the past.

  • i tried checking if the winning bidder has bid on any of the sellers other items, however ebay has changed now so that you cant see the actual user ID of the bidder, it just says 'Bidder1; Bidder2' etc...

Although... this seller has powerseller status and 3340 100% positive feedback, with a few similar second-hand items, so all seems in order?

  • I hate all this bidder 1 and 2 stuff. It hides shill bidding and I'm pretty sure shill bidding is a thing ebay profit from greatly. I never accept any second chance offers, smells too fishy to me.
