student account/credit history

Hi all

I recently had a meeting with my bank with a view to opening a student account (so it would be an upgrade to my account now i have with them, just a basic account) and am due to start university in October. I took along with me all my student loan confirmation letters and identification but unfortunately i was knocked back after a credit score.

I am aware i have some defaults on my credit file, but was foolish enough to go in anyway and try my chances assuming my regular payments of loans over the next two years would support me in my application.

While i am living where i am now before i move to London where i'll be studying, i am claiming JSA as i come out of a job in March, i'm even still looking for temporary work here to do anything to earn a bit of extra cash before i go so that's the reason i remain on JSA ... is there a chance that is the reason i was immediately declined the student account or will my other credit history have been the bigger factor in this decision. I am currently in the process of trying to build up my credit file and am speaking to advisors etc, but would like to know if anyone else has much experience with problems with student accounts etc. Also, any information on anything else i may be eligible to try for once i start university account wise would be great (poor credit student accounts etc) .. i'm just looking in to as much financial help as possible as i can get during my time in university/working part time come October and am a bag of nerves at the moment!! Any help/feedback would be more than appreciated. :)
