Travelling light!

I think my Kindle is the one thing which will definately help with travelling lighter this year - last year for a 3 week trip I took about 6 'reading' books plus a load of travel guides and they weighed an absolute ton.

So far I have about 50 or so books on the Kindle, maybe 5 of those have been paid for (cost c.70p - £2 each) and the rest have been free! I agree that if you're looking for books from the big established authors like Dan Brown then the Kindle editions can be silly money compared to buying a paperback version second hand or in a cheap book shop, but so far all of the free or cheap Kindle books I've tried from newer authors have been excellent. It's a good way to try new authors too - good for someone like me who reads a lot and has pretty much exhausted the back catalogue of most of the established authors I like.

It's one of those things that I thought was just a silly expensive gadget until I tried it, but now I don't know how I managed without it! Yes it's a fairly big outlay initially at £100+ but well worth it for the convenience in my opinion, and the ability to check emails without having to find a computer on holiday is, as ferf said, a very handy bonus.

Now if only someone could invent something which allows me to take all my clothes, shoes and make up in a handy little electronic device, my packing dilemmas will finally be sorted :rotfl:

But I can check email on my Kindle (it's not very fast, and not terribly user-friendly - but still, it can be done)...so that is a bonus, right? :)

No, not a bonus as I don't check my emails when I'm on holiday. ;)

At East Midlands Airport you can take an extra bag of shopping from any of the airside stores as well as your cabin baggage. I flew with Ryanair at Easter and took a bag from Boots containing 3 meal deals and some toiletries. The sales assistant very helpfully found a larger carrier bag for me.[/QUOTE]

We flew from East Mids on Monday (to Tallinn with Ryanair) and we were able to take on board a large (cost 8p) carrier bag from W.H. Smith....on RYANAIR! It took me two days to get over the shock :D. Really great to be able to decant books/sandwich/newspaper for the flight, plus it saved squashing up my handbag.
Only from East Mids though I think, and (obviously) couldn't use it on the way back.
    Normal people worry me.

couldn't use it on the way back.

The thing is (for me, anyway) it doesn't matter so much on the way back as I've dumped all the left over shampoo/suntan cream and given away any charity shop paperbacks. Also I often shop in charity shops for cheap tops etc and if I'm pushed for space on the way back, I either give them to the local animal charity for car booting, or leave them for the cleaner with a note (otherwise they have to store them as lost property).
