I hate taking out teeth and having had a bash at a pigs head for a training course I do not envy you guys!!! Pigs teeth are an absolute nightmare so I can only imagine what others are like!0 -
Well peeps the deed is done. I have an appointment (thanks to my work mate who had no idea my fear was this bad) with her dentist. It is a lady dentist and even though they stopped taking on NHS patients they agreed to take me on as the dentist is very good at treating people like me.
They have said that they will take their time with me.
I have my appointment on the 20th and my boss has said that incase I chicken out between now and then, he has banned me from calling them and he made me get an appointment during the day so he can take me there and bring me back (I really hope he has tissues cause I know I will need them lol)
Thank you for your advice :-D now just need to get to the 20th without being a gibbering reck!0 -
The 2-3 second job extraction must have been on a very diseased tooth
No, it wasnt, just a very experienced dentist, and your assumption offends me.
I have already apologised to Toothsmith, I would be grateful if you would read my post in which I did and take it on board too.
Sorry if it offended you. In the training and CPD I have done in dentistry they all tell us you have to slowly break down the periodontal ligament using luxators etc before extraction, so I presumed in human dentistry it was similar, and that if he managed to extract it so easily there must have been periodontal disease affected the surrounding structures. Sorry that I misunderstood in your case, as I said, not a dentist
@welshdent-its a nightmare! especially cats teeth with odontoclastic lesions at the neck, where the crown basically breaks off, so you have to do surgical extractions to get the roots out. Or large SOLID bar a fractured crown 3 rooted teeth in a german shepherd-thats FUN (not!!) I was amazed when my OH went to dentist recently, and was found to have 2 retained roots from previous extractions, as we are taught that is a complete disaster and you must get them out. I couldn't be a dentist tho, dealing with teeth is only a part of my job at the moment!0 -

Awww well done you, I have just recently started going to a dentist again and to be honest with you the first appointment I very nearly ran, luckily the dentist I have is great and she takes time and explains everything she's about to do, she also allows me to raise my hand if I want her to stop at any point!
You will be fine and honestly the anticipation of it is worse than the actual thing, just keep thinking of how your smile is going to be when it's all done and maybe try a few relaxation techniques to help you but well done on making the first brave step! Don't forget to come back and tell us how well you did!Kate

If the tooth wasn't diseased why did it need to be removed? I'm a lady dentist (shock horror) and taking teeth out is my favourite job. I have never spent 2-3 seconds on an extraction though.0 -

Well done you
Try not to let it build up in your mind between now and then, believe it or not your worst fears are probably going to be a lot worse then what will actually happen.
Your dentist sounds like they know how to get scared patients through their treatment so you will hopefully get a few of the smaller bits of work done first just to get you used to the noises and sensations and for you both the get an idea on what you can actually cope with.
It also sounds like you have a great support system in place with your friends and colleagues. Use them
Good luck xxx0
