You will have been offered BG Standars or 4% discount tracker at best, both of which are marginally cheaper than Eon Standard, you will not see a massive reduction in cost. Scottish Power Online Energy Saver 14 is one of the cheapest deals available right now, and will not have a unit rate increase on 1st August 2011, when the prices for all the other Scottish Power variable tariffs go up - but the Online Energy Saver 14 IS a variable rate so the prices quoted today on a comparison site, by Nov/DEc approx this year will havce been subjected to the increases the rest of Scotish Powers customers face in August just delayed for a couple of months. All of the top results on the copmparison sites today are variable tariffs, so cheap today but as soon as the rest of the company's announce increases they will become dearer by a good 15-20% if not more. You would be best to look at a fixed rate, best short term fix is EDF Fixed Saver 2 until Sept 2012, after that probably a toss up between Fixed Price 5 with Eon until 1st July 2013 or Capped Price Energy June 2013 (31-5-2013) with Scottish Power.

Switching takes 4-5 weeks, so 12/8 might be a little too near the deadline, best to wait a few more days.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
