online store sent out customer email addresses to all customers!

Options
I'm a bit shocked today I signed up to a store's online newsletter as I love their products and today I received the newsletter but it had somehow copied ALL the email addresses into the email so I and everyone else has a copy of everyone's email address!!!

To be honest I hadn't actually noticed until they sent another email pointing it out and apologising for the breach in data protection.

I am really not happy as I choose who to give my email address to and I don't like that 100's now have it!
 thanks to all who post comps

And what do you want to happen to the company.

Take them to small claim courts for damages and stress why dont you.

Pfft seriously posting here about this.

    ....but think of the children!

Anyone can get an email address if they really want to - these things happen - they said sorry, no real issue to be honest...

It's a pretty stupid thing for them to do... but I doubt all their other customers will be contacting each other.

let alone people selling these email addresses to marketing companies

i hate all this negativity on here of late - if u dont have any advice - go post elsewhere where u can help someone.

I doubt you'd really get anything out of them even if you were looking as your e-mail address isn't exactly a massive data protection breach. Plus they've done what they could to remedy the situation as soon as it came to light. So long as you've got a reasonable spam filter on your e-mails you shouldn't need to be any more vigilant than you already were. If you don't already get some spam then you're lucky anyway. Even before I really used one of my e-mail accounts, and certainly had not entered it anywhere online yet, I already started getting about 10 pieces a day. My filter deals with it, I check it now and again when I can be bothered to make sure nothing gets caught that shouldn't, no problem.

Not commenting on whether people jump on others etc. But if the OP wanted to rant, then the post would be better suited to praise/vents. Although i can see where the confusion comes in. I cant fault pcombo entirely either as i know there are a "ambulance chaser" attitudes from a LOT of posters. We're quick falling into the "whats it in for me" culture that seems to have shaped america's legal system.

Now that being said, i said i recognise where the confusion comes in. Has the OP posted here by accident or have they omitted their expectation of compensation from their original post?

Regardless, while the company involved may provide a goodwill gesture, that doesnt mean the OP is entitled to it. I agree its a breach of privacy and in light of that, the OP may wish to report it to the ICO and/or ask the company to remove all their personal records under the data protection act.

Things are easy to misunderstand online as you cant hear the tone of someones voice or read their facial expressions/body language. And if you read thread after thread of people looking for something for nothing then read this post, its all too likely that you would think they were the same. Its like the childhood trick of asking people questions to get them to say words like ghost/host/most then asking what they put in a toaster.....your brain is on a particular line of thinking so it is natural reaction to say toast, you only say bread if you change your line of thinking first.

As for pffft, i'd hardly attribute it to a new fad from kids. I've been saying/using it for the past 15 years.

It can change meaning with how its used but generally its a dismissive type sound. It can also show a sort of disapproving/disbelief.

Like you say Oh i really care about our friendship.
