The laptop has an HDMI port and I've got it hooked up to the modern tv and I'm defo selecting the correct source, etc on the tv remote.
I've gone to the 'Display Settings' (Vista) and I clicked on the screen marked '2', checked the box marked 'extend the desktop onto this monitor' and made it all a permanent change.
Still got zilch on my tv.....any ideas?

Many laptops need some keys pressing to activate the port- on some there may be an 'FN' key and another key with a TV symbol (often in blue), pressing 'FN' and the 'TV screen' key a few times toggles between modes such as 'LCD laptop screen' / TV and LCD Laptop screen / TV screen only etc etc
I think my laptop was FN and F7 pressed together a few times.
Here's a typical example:

Also make sure you connect the HDMI cable with both items turned off as some tv's and laptops may not detect correctly if plugged in while running (my PC's graphics card goes nuts if I connect/disconnect with the PC and LCD running when HDMI lead is used)

Thanks for the comprehensive answer.
I have to pop out just now but I'll check everything you've said when I'm back.0 -
It will be easier if you provide us with the laptop make and model.
However......
(1) Plug in the HDMI cable from the laptop to the TV i.e. switch off laptop and TV when doing so.
(2) Switch on TV
(3) Switch on laptop and login as usual.
(4) Select HDMI input on your tv.
Any picture?
(5) If not, go to control panel and find the video output software e.g. intel driver for mobile or some make such as nvidia or ATI.
(6) Select output mode - usually one on one.
Does it output?
(6) no? on your keyboard. You will see an icon on top of the F buttons eg. F8 or F2. Does it have a monitor icon or the words CRT/LCD? If so, select by holding down either the Fn or ctrl or even the windows button with the F8/F2 etc button.
Does it work?
(7) if not, reinstall your video driver. Look for the latest driver.
Does not work?
(8) Find another HDMI cable? Is it faulty? If not - your laptop HDMI port is faulty.Motto: 'If you don't ask, you don't get!!'
Remember to say thank you to people who help you out!

OK....long story short......my laptop is an ASUS X50 GL? series with nVidia.
The laptop and tv are defo speaking to each other.....in the nVidia control panel my tv is showing up as a screen option. I've set the screens to 'Clone' with Laptop as the primary display.....when I apply this, the message on my tv screen changes to ''the resolution is not supported on this TV, please change the resolution''.......the tv is HD ready not full HD.
I'm then going to the 'Change resolution' part of the nVidia control panel......it first asks 'select the display you would like to change'.....it is set to Laptop, though Samsung is next to it....I've left this as it is which I presume is correct.
Next are the resolution settings with sliders. The display resolution is set to maximum, which is 1280 x 800 and the Clour quality is at 'highest' which is 32-bit. the refresh rate is at 59 Hertz.
I've tried playing about with these settings.....i.e reducing the display resolution down to 1024 x 768....but nothing happens except the tv goes back to just asking me to check my connections, etc.
There is a button at F7 which makes my screen go almost black and says 'LCD OFF' on the screen....then comes back to normal if I press it again. And F8 which also makes the screen go almost black and toggles between 'LCD' and 'HDMI-HDMI' and 'LCD+HDMI' (that's the one I'm leaving it on).

I've had laptops before go pretty much "what the hell is this" when you plug a big tv/monitor in. if it cant support the resolution sometimes it just craps out0

If I get a vga cable instead (male to male?)....will that work or am I likely to have the same problem?0
-
VGA cable might help.
See if using the presentation settings help, with WINDOWS key + P0 -
Have a look in your TV's manual and see exactly what input resolutions it supports, including and less than your nVidia's maximum of 1200 x 600.
Download and install PowerStrip and use it to set the nVidias output resolution to match one that the TV supports.604!0
