I cannot believe what I have just read!!!! I was shown the same thing at catholic school in 1984!!!!!

What is the issue with learning about sex? We wouldn't be here without it.

    At Catholic school?
I agree that they should though ;)

Even the rythmn method would be a start - girls might be more aware when they were particularly fertile.

Our school have offered us the opportunity to watch the video so that we have an idea of what to expect. The only problem was that they showed it after school on Monday so I had the kids with me!

This was around 1998/9 so things really haven't changed!

Well I did not go to a catholic school. But my nice girls' grammar thought 2 lines on how rabbits do it was nearly sufficient. "Humans do it very much the same way" the teacher added.

My school start the physical side of sex ed in year 5, although we teach about 'relationships' from Reception.

In year 5, we cover puberty and feelings. In year 6 they cover how babies get made and born (and more feelings!)

We separate the girls and boys for the puberty DVD and then they watch the 'other' one in Year 6.

In fact today they watched a dvd showing a woman give birth with all the gory bits and the head coming out  - is this normal for sex ed? I have to say I wouldn't have wanted to watch it.

He says the lessons have been "disturbing" but I think he's just being dramatic lol.

You laugh, but the only sex education lessons I remember are from primary school and it was a similar gory nasty video.

To this day I can still clearly see the appalling images in my head and hear the screaming from the women giving birth when the head came out covered in blood and white stuff.

I've always wondered whether that had a bearing on my decision to not have children.

I was walking home the other day behind two boys (maybe 11ish) who were talking about a sex ed lesson they'd had at school. They were showing off and talking really loudly to prove they knew what it was all about.
I couldn't keep a straight face listening to them - whatever they'd been told/shown it had clearly gone completely over their heads and the amount of misinformation coming out of the mouths was a wonder to behold. If that's the norm for school sex ed lessons round our way, I certainly wouldn't be relying on them to teach the kids anything useful.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

My dd has just recently had this - she was explaining what they had been told/taught and we couldn't believe it - they basically spent not even a quarter of the time on contraception/sex but the rest was the biology of giving birth

The nurse even had them in pairs one lying on the floor pretending to give birth while the other one pretended to get the baby out and then the afterbirth out!

How the hell that is relevent to a Y6 child is beyond me - they should be teaching them about life before giving birth ie sex/relationships/contraception etc (as has been said on earlier posts)

Mind you, when I was at school we had NOTHING not even a biology lesson on how babies are born etc - and this was a secondary school
