Hey Hey
it's a simple one this time
I've been in contact with AOL recently regarding our IP Address being from the USA (see this thread) and as is the way with their phone support, after getting the wrong end of the stick and placing me on hold for a long time, they insisted that it is my fault I'm getting a US I.P. Address and have sent me the following by email:
"To change the mtu size you have to open netgear page and click on wan setup change the mtu size to 1200 from there."
I've done that (it was previously set to 1450) but what exactly is MTU? And how is this going to affect my IP address?
He said it will help webpages load faster
I'm very confused, I may use that smiley again

EDIT - I'm now in New York instead of Washington DC :rotfl: no other changes noted

maximum transmission unit, and I doubt very much it will do anything to you ip address issue. Setting it too high or too low, causes a packet to be fragmented/retransmitted. 1200 is a bit low. 1400-1450 should be ok on AOL.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

Dr. TCP (http://www.dslreports.com/drtcp) is a nice, simple program for tweaking your network. Just google each of the settings to find out what they do.
I can't remember where I read it, but apparently in the UK you should normally set the MTU to 1458 (although *hopefully* the AOL engineers know more about this than I do...).0 -

Aol like to be different. It's 1400 with them. Half the sites stop working when I leave it on 14580 -
If you are a little bit techie or good at following instructions this page will tell you how to get the max MTU usable for your connection...

Also.. If you have other computers connected to the router it is also reccomended that the MTU is set in each PC.. Use DRTCP to do this0
