How I saved over £20,000

and still got what I wanted. Old Style because its a hand made "barn raising". We ,my DH amd me live on small holding. We have a smallish old storage shed, DH rebuilt it about 5 years ago ,it consists of timber and metal sheet roof. its functional but not smart. We are short of storage space and have an old tractor which would benefit from being indoors iin the winter. So we enquired about a smart new agricultural shed. total cost some £22,000.
We cant afford that so looked at it another way. Leave up the old shed and extend it. DH hard work in rebuilding wont be wasted and the whole thing much cheaper. we sourced timber and sheets and got it down to £1200 for new materials and other stuff sourced off freecycle. not content with that we dug further thought laterally and have a figure of approx £800 now.
So if something seems out of reach dont give up, think around the problem accept compromise and reach your dream.:j

Thats brilliant! Needs must as the devil drives as they say. We taught ourselves to repair our washing machine, tumble drier and even the cooker. We must have saved a fortune over the years. Pity you can't work on your car nowadays as they are so complicated - apparently garages are continually paying for updates to their computer systems so they can diagnose a problem! I helped my Dad when I was young and then my OH to do many big jobs on our cars. Theres not much you can't fix other than cars though especially if it would have to go to the tip otherwise. I had a bit of a search for an element for the cooker but did it all on line, of course you shouldn't attempt some jobs unless you have some one to check them - I have a handy electrician who checks mine for me in exchange for a cuppa and cake ( and a listen to him moaning about life - well his ex)

    Hi oldtractor,

I've moved your thread over to the In My Home board as it may inspire others to do it themselves.
