Halifax (BoS) scheduled payments

My Bank of Scotland Faster Payments are limited to £1000 and the system doesn't allow me to make more than 2 FPs out per account.

Once I have exhausted my FP quota, the system offers a BACS payment scheduled to go out the following working day.

However, I when I tried this with £1 the payment went through as FP on the following working day (not by BACS).

Has anyone tested this with bigger amounts?

Do scheduled payments to FP-capable destinations ever go out by BACS?

I've had similar experiences with larger amounts.

I believe these changes may be in relation to parts of legislation, PSR, which comes into force in November this year. From the Bank of Scotland website (link):
What do the Payment Services Regulations 2009 mean to me?
The majority of payments you send from the 7th November 2011 will arrive by the next working day, where as previously, payments often took up to 4 days. Some payments will remain unaffected. These include those executed wholly in cash, cheques and other paper based transactions such as banker's drafts. For more information you can also visit the FSA website.

Basically the bank can post date the payment to go the next working day, then send it FPS. This allows a little extra time for security checks etc., although I'm not aware of the exact reasoning. Good news all round, but hopefully not the start of a blanket "next working day" policy for Faster Payments, instead of the current immediate service - although HBOS's implementation can only improve due to its shaky credential ATM.
Anything I post is my opinion, so from time to time I may be wrong. I try to provide answers based in fact, however I don't know everything, so (like all posters on MSE), take what I say with a pinch of salt.

The system appears to bundle up next day payment requests and send them as standing orders.

In HBOS standing orders go as FP.

In Lloyds they don't, so there could be a period between September and November where this doesn't work, as the HBOS platform is switched off and moved over to the Lloyds one.

In other words, don't rely on it just yet!

Immediate FPs are hit-and-miss. If part of the system is down, they simply fail. So your user interface has to provide you with immediate feedback. It's down to you to check status, and if the payment fails, it's down to you to try again later or make alternative arrangements, because the bank won't.

A scheduled FP has to go as part of a system where the bank makes sure the payment goes through, within a timescale.

So two different beasts, each with its own niche.

The nub of the problem is that HBOS limits my FPs so severely that my instant access Web Sever is anything but instant. I have to plan days ahead to shift my money out.

My personal limits are well below the HBOS' FP limits.

The worst thing is it's unpredictable when the system starts blocking FPs.

Web Saver doesn't do same day faster payments.

If you transfer it to a Halifax current account (instantly) you could then do the FP from there with more chance of success.

I have three BoS current accounts and am trying to send the FPs from there.

The limits are completely undeterministic. Yesterday, I tried £2500 - FP denied. Tried £1000 - out as FP.

To-day, I tried £2500 - FP allowed but I mistakenly hit the "back" button. Since then I haven't even been allowed £1 by FP via that account.

I read somewhere that even failed FP attempts count towards the daily FP limit.

    Hi Dagobert,
I also have found my Halifax FP system to be a little bit crazy. Sometimes I might be able to send FPs from one halifax account but not another and sometime I have to split the payments into multiple £500 payments.

I have also found out that the system is reluctant to allow FPs to payees which have been recently setup. All I can suggest is try a different BoS account to send the FP out and see whether that helps.

    Good luck,
    Nessie

I thought I could defeat the system by making payments out everyday over several days.

I started yesterday with one FP of £2500 out of each of my current accounts.

To-day, I find all my current accounts refuse even the smallest FP.

I am now trying a scheduled £2500 payment hoping it will go out as FP to-morrow.
