Building society mergers - Windfalls

I remember seeing a few thread that said "xxx bank and yyy bank (merged)" but have no idea which discussion forum they belong to and I apologies if the following subject has been discussed already elsewhere.

BBC News mentioned about building societies merging and there may be windfalls.

Does anyone know which building societies I should go and open my new account so that I may be just lucky to receive these windfalls

According to the BBC Business report that I watched yesterday it could be any one of 50 Building Societies, with the prediction that upto 5 may merge in 2007.

So, unless someone has some good insider knowledge, or you have a lot of spare cash to invest then it will be pot luck really.

Also, the article said that a lot of societies in order to prevent people just joining to benefit from potential windfalls have implented new rules stating that you must pay in a minimum each month, or maintain an overall balance etc.

I wouldn't get your hopes up - I just opened an account with Yorkshire Building Society (for the rate, not windfall potential) and they made me sign away any windfall to charity for the next 5 years!
