PC World Laptop, £199!

I've never laughed as much as I have reading this thread. I love how people claim it's a bit of poo simply cos it's not armed with the fastest CPU on the market and isn't full of dual channel RAM.
This machine is more than sufficient to run fully updated XP SP2, perfectly capable of surfing the net at any speed (more bandwidth does not need a better PC), playing DVDs, listening to music over a network, writing emails, word processing, chatting with MSN live and using the Java platform.
Let's put it into context, for £199 I got a NEW laptop. It comes with a genuine copy of MS Windows XP home and Works home office software all with 12 months warranty. If the Ram isnt enough it will cost me no more than £30 to triple it. The screen is bright, the battery lasts nearly 2 hours and it is as quiet as a whisper.
The warranty is a legal binding contract and although some of you claim PCW World staff are entirely made up of low skilled monkeys they are still 100% legaly bound to repair it. In fact, some people may well have the guts to pursue the warranty beyond the 12 months and successfully be able to get the equipment fixed.
2 years ago I bought my Mrs a mactop for £850, after 14 months it died. Apple wanted £400 to fix it as the CPU and Motherboard had fried. I could have bought this laptop 4 times over and still had £50 change, I'm sure at least one of them would still be working. Since then my mrs has been using my uber laptop given me by work, £1500 worth of widescreen lovelyness used for MSNing her friends. The most stressful thing she ever used it for was Runescape (an online Java game). Guess what, Runescape works perfectly on this £200 laptop, even with music playing and MSN in the background.
And to top it all off this is what she said about it: "I much prefer this one; it's lighter, quieter, cooler, easier to hold and it's shiny ".
The upshot is I get my laptop back, Mrs is happy and get more sex for a short period in gratitude. Ultimately, the world is a better place.
Oh, and before anyone says I don't know what I'm talking about, I am a tech journalist for one of the most popular and respected hardware sites in the UK so I have seen my fair share of cheap tat. This may well be cheap tat, but it does exactly what it says on the tin and is perfect for £200.
Edit: I mistyped 3 hours battery (corrected it now).0 -
The battery lasts 3 hours even though they quote 1 hour themselves? :rolleyes:0

Trust me, it doesn't last an hour, yesterday it lasted 1 hour and 50 something minutes of normal net surfing. Battery life in my wife's case is academic really because being used at home it is never out of range of a plug socket.
Edit: I mistyped 3 hours (corrected it now).0 -
Its a £200 laptop for £200 not a £600 or £700 pound laptop which is a bargain price. The price you pay is the laptops value.0

Hi all
Ok I appreciate this laptop is cheap and probs naff etc, and so many people were saying you can get a better one second hand. So please tell me where to get one!
I am a part time student. I only therefore need a laptop for typing essays so therefore dont want to spend a lot of money.
I have been looking around, and only see items for spares/repairs fro under £150, which obviously as someone who has no idea about comps etc is of no use.
So please if someone could tell me if anyone is selling a cheap working laptop it would be very cool!
Thanks

add another £75 quid or so for Windows then or try and run Linux (not much fun with Dells in my experience)
so real price is £350+ for refurbished second hand laptop. You can but a new Dell cheaper than that!he's not the Messiah, he's a very naughty boy !0 -
Having bought one of these yesterday I've got to agree with flyUK and lowbrim. It all depends on what you want to do with it. I run a wired/wireless network at home with 5 computers, two tivos and an xbox media centre. I build my own computers to specs that suit their tasks, so video editing only takes place on the one machine that can handle it. The children play games on another machine that is specced for that. The slower dell tower is in the airing cupboard serving music to the bath and shower rooms and there is a medium specced machine for email, homework etc. The oldlaptop that I just used for browsing bit the dust on Christmas day so I was a sad git who queued for one of these and it's way faster than the 6 year old laptop
i was previously using. I'm very happy with it so for me it was a bargain!Regards

A second hand item of better spec would have no Windows (or an illegal version as its none transferrable i think...) - No warranty against faults or a return policy (I dont care what you say about PC World.. the warranty is there...) etc etc..
A second hand item is old and damaged.. thats why you can get it cheaper!!!!
This NEW laptop is perfect for the reasons everyone else is suggesting too. We seem to be in agreement now.
REMEMBER ONCE AGAIN who this laptop is aimed for. Also remember this is posted in the part of the forum to alert people to the deal so thats the end of the debate really!
THANK YOU OP FOR ALERTING ME TO THIS DEAL
am sure the gran will be very happy!
EDIT: And at the post above mine.. you gotta stop raising the price!! OF COURSE more expensive laptops are going to be better.. why are you stating the obvious as an argument? It doesnt work like that... This is a moneysavingforum.. ok it might be better value but this is a budget cheap laaptop that cna be easily afforded end of! No argument needed.
If you bothered to read my post you will see that I was actually defending you. I was just pointing out that this is perfect for the people that prefer to buy new. So no laughing at wat I posted please, read it next time0
