Lloyds TSB debit card and SWT ticket machines

  • If it's a Visa Electron or Visa Delta, the person at the window can usually put it through as a Visa Credit Card (and normally works); but the self service machine will only allow the primary card type to be used (i.e. Electron/Delta).

Here we are, a month later. I went into the branch today and asked why my card wouldn't work. The woman behind the counter was at a loss too as to why it didn't work, and they even phoned up some place to see if my card wasn't blocked (because apparently it can be if they detect an odd pattern).

They did say that there were quite a few refused transactions (probably the card being rejected at the ticket machine) but there apparently wasn't a reason logged (usually is, or so they told me).

They don't know what else to suggest, they couldn't see any other reason why it shouldn't work. They also ordered me a replacement card too just in case this one was duff so we'll see if this one works and it should be with me in a few days.

I have also written to South West Trains regarding this issue but have received no reply (been a few weeks!).

Does anyone else here have a Lloyds TSB debit card? If so, what type is it and do you have problems with the ticket machines?

I now have a Lloyds TSB Visa Debit card but have never used it in a ticket machine.

Does seem to take quite a while to process like someone said earlier though, thought it was going to fail in Tesco the other day.

  • In the shop where I work, before we were kitted out with Chip & Pin, LloydsTSB debit cards used to not always 'swipe' on the first swipe and we had to swipe the card through 2 or 3 times to get the till to read the card stripe. Don't know if this is still the case as it's company policy not to swipe cards anymore even when the customer has forgotten their pin etc.
  • The 2-1 debit control cards need to access a terminal to check available balance before working.
It is probable that these ticket machines do not provide this and they therefore will not work.
