i need advice please

I retired in 2006 and went to live in Thailand.
After a while i moved to the Philippines to live.

My Nat west ATM card expired and i asked Nat west to send me a new cardto the Philippines.
They asked me to confirm this in writing with my philipine address, i did this.

One month latter no card was sent so i chased them up, a new one would be put in the post and the old one cancelled i was told.

Another month went buy, still no card was sent ,i was desperate for money, so i started to use my visa card to make cash withdrawals.

Nat west never did send me a card so i carried on using my visa card, i withdrew over 20,000 pounds using this method.

I went back to England to visit my family, got my new card within 4 working days.

I went back to live in Thailand after my UK visit.

This new card was for 2 years, but it ran out December 2010.

I telephoned the bank from Thailand and asked them to send me a new card to my Thailand address
Nat west said they would do that.

grrr, march 2011, still no card, i telephoned them again and spoke to a nice lady who gave me her name and a reference number, she said one would be sent out to me.

I received several letters saying my card was on its way, the letters contained my new pin number.

July 2011, still no f-ing card, but now they have sent me a card reader. hip, hip. hooray.

6 july 2011, i telephoned them again, only to be told that a card would not be sent to me as i lived in a high risk country.
I have gone through much stress and financial hardship over this.
I resorted to transferring money though on line banking to my daughters account, she sent me the money through western union to Thailand at 53 pounds charges at a time.

Nat west in the meantime told me if i wrote them a letter authorizing Nat west to send my new card to my daughters address they would and she can post it out to me in Thailand , i have already sent the letter asking them to do this

Could someone advise me which way to go about this.
Thank you in advance for your reply's

I think Natwest last solution is the logical one.

My problem has been ongoing since 2007, they always promised to send me new cards but never managed it once.

In the end my visa card expired, so i had no access to any money at all, i flew back to the UK got a new card and flew back to Thailand.

That card expired December 2010, i have gone through seven months of hell trying to get a new card off Nat west, they sent me two letters containing my new ATM pin numbers but i never received a card, but they sent me a card reader

Another phone call, ruth in manchester said no problem we will cancell the first card and send you a new one out to your address we have on file in Thailand any problems my reference is Ruth, Manchester, code 00-77.

another letter arrives at my address in Thailand with a new pin number.

surprise surprise no card came again. this brings me up to july, the first call i made about my new card was December 2010.

on the phone again and this time when i pressed them what can i do to overcome this, was the suggestion made i could authorize my daughter in the UK to have the new card posted to her.
this has only taken them four years to inform me of a solution to my problem

now my complaint is this, i have incurred unnecessary expenses to get around the problems that Nat west has caused me.

can i claim anything off them to compensate my unnecessary experiences.

i would imagine it was not cheap to take out 20,000 pounds in cash from my credit card and repay the whole sum every month from a standing order i made out to coop visa.

if they concentrated more on customer service this would not have happened.

they read from a script when i call them going on about mortgages and pensions, give me a break Nat west all i wanted was one ATM card.

can i go anywhere with this guys, or should i put it down to experience.
thank you for any advice and assistance you can give me.

You can only complain to Natwest. As a non UK resident, your options beyond that are more limited.

It does seem daft that they will send a PIN but not a card. Surely any ruling on risk would apply to both?

Not sure why you would have to imagine if it was cheap or not, did you pay interest on the amount you withdrew as cash? Have you actually made a complaint to them about it yet?

When i lived in the Philippines, i faced the same problem, my Nat west card ran out.
they put me in the promised land regarding sending out a new card to me, it never came.

so to overcome this problem i set up a standing order with Nat west to pay coop visa the full amount every month that i had used on my credit card.
one month i racked up 11,000 pounds on my card, and the bill was paid in full, taken straight out of my Nat west account

they sent me a card reader to the philippines, but i had no card. lol.

i have not complained yet, but i want to take this further if i can.
that is why i am seeking your advice before i take action.

my daughter will have all the visa card statements going back 5 years, i understand i need these as evidence.

i wish i had found this site sooner.
    thank you all.
  • did you pay interest on the amount you withdrew as cash?

    Yes i was charged interest.
I was borrowing money with my credit card.
I was using it just like a ATM card to overcome my problem.
What ever i spent in on month on my coop credit card,
the full amount was taken from my Nat west account and paid in full

why do they send me card readers and pin numbers to the Philippines and Thailand, but no ATM card ? ? ? ?

Why did Ruth in Manchester give me her name and a reference number 0077, if you don't get your card, quote this number she told me.

update, Nat west have phoned my daughter and left her a voice message,
she has a account at the same branch as me.

it takes 2 weeks for a letter to travel from the UK to Thailand.
i cant see me getting my ATM card until September.

I am using western union now.
i go to my on line banking, transfer money into my daughters account.
she withdraws the money, send it to me in Thailand through western union.
I have paid 80 pounds in charges to do this and i will need to do this again before my ATM card arrives.

Any advice, what can i do ?
thank you all who have replied to my problems.

Can't NatWest do an international transfer for you?

TBH I can think of several way of getting money abroad, none of which involve withdrawing cash from an ATM via CC. For instance you could get a pre-paid ATM or foreign cash card sent to your daughter and forwarded to you which you then load up over the internet. Should be nowhere near as expensive. I can't see NatWest being too interested in the costs you have incurred especially since to them you seem to have chosen some of the most expensive options available
  • could you not just tell them you live at your daughters address now? and when the card comes, just get her to ship it to you?
  • Thanks one again for you help.
My daughter is posting the card over to me in thailand.

My whole point of this discussion is Nat west spun me a tale for four years, telling me my ATM card was being sent to the phillipines and Thailand.

Why would they send me card readers and pin letters containing my new pin numbers, to both country's ?.

Then during a recent phone call, i was informed they class both country's as a high risk, and would not send me a ATM card.

Why was i not informed of this decision in 2007 when all this started ?
