Npower HUGE £2000 prepayment meter bill, advice please!

I recieved a statement a few days ago stating my electricity usage which said I was £170 in credit on my meter but when I rang to ask if there was any chance I could get that back I was told there was a recent adjustment on my account which said I was now £2000 in debit!!!
I recieved the new statement today and it's almost identical to the one saying I was in credit, however they've changed my usage from about £37 for one period up to over £1500, and they also reckon I've used over £500 worth of electric overnight over the past few months.
Every single statement I get says I've been in credit and I've never had a penny back from them. I've been living here for over three years and my average yearly electricity usage according to the first bill they sent is about £366, as far as I knew I wasn't paying any debts on my meter so I'm at a loss... I called them and it's being investigated but I'm worried they might pull some "magic maths" and I'll be left with a hefty debt to pay
Has anyone ever else had any similar experiences, what may have caused this (seems like a huge error?) and can it be resolved successfully without having to cough up huge sums?
Any help/advice/reassurance would be appreciated
Thanks

This answer is a long shot - you have an E7 setup but a 1-rate tariff has been applied to the meter which means you have only been paying the the elec you have used during the day. This has now been discovered and they are back billing you for the elec used at night.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

Hi missnikkai
Something certainly doesn't seem right here.
If you send your details to forumresponse@npower.com, I can take a look in to your account for you?
Thanks

I hope this is an error and they sort it for you!
We are on prepayment meter and have been billed a massive bill before, but it was put right in the end.0 -
i had the same when i moved into my house many years ago - what happened for me was , whilst we had changed supplier when we moved something went wrong , and the pre payment key was actually paying another company! so we ended up getting a bill - but a few phone calls (and alot of waiting) but it was sorted - the new supplier claimed the money back , alothugh it was starnge as we were sent a new key (and installed it properly)
changed to dd meters so all is happy now0 -
Hi we had the same problem one statement said they owed us over 400.00 pound when I phoned up to get it back they said they would look into it as there shouldn't be credits on the pre pay meter
They then sent me a new statement saying that I owed them 170.00 pound
They just would not listen anyway I was t going to let it drop and luckily for me I noticed that the figures in the statement were not adding up
They had some how added over three thousand units into the cost split colum
The only advise I can give is go through all your statements with a fine tooth comb and make sure the figures in the units used are the same in the cost split
Hope that helps and be warned it won't be quick mine took over two months
