How Far in Advance of the End of a Fixed Tariff Deal Can I Switch?

I'm currently on NPower electricity GoFix2, locked in till 31 July 2011, and on NPower gas Sign Online 19, locked in till 30 Sep 2011.

I have received a letter from NPower talking about the rate increase in my electricity supply from 1 August. How soon can I change suppliers and not worry about being hit with any penalties? I'm worried about the price increases predicted across the industry, so want to switch asap, but obviously don't want NPower to say I switched too soon.

Thanks in advance!

Switching takes 4 to 5 weeks, so you can move your leccy now, but not the gas.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
