Why do Employers leave you HANGING after an interview?

Why is it that when in an interview their all nice and friendly and say they'll contact you within whatever timeline they have, YET when you dont get the job they dont even bother to tell you??
Why is this?? Surely their not interviewing hundred of people that they cant even tell you 'no sorry' or write telling you?
I had one tell me they'd tell me either way by Friday... come the following Monday I knew I didnt have it, so rang for feedback and shesaid 'We gave it to sumone else' and SLAMMED down the phone. seriously why so rude? I received no feedback!
Do these people not realise that their interviewees are on zero or low income and have paid peak travel prices to attend their interview slot?? and actually genuinely want the job? Only to leave them hanging with no word as to what went wrong?
Surely the LEAST they can do is tell you no and why? Is that really too much to ask?

I always (as do my staff who interview) phone every candidate as soon as a decision is made - the first chance I get, either that evening or the next day, to tell them the outcome and to give them feedback if they want it. Without fail. I always have. And I know a lot of other employers who do the same thing. So it isn't all employers.0

It's not just if you don't get the job, I got interviewed two years ago and was told I'd impressed them and was through to the second interview stage.... I'm still waiting for it..0

5 minutes into my first intervew for one job i was told about what would happen at the 2nd interview. YESSSS i though! the manager told me he picked my CV out to show his HR manager exactly who he was looking for and was very impressed and i was ideal for the role then said he would speak to me the following day on the phone.
2 weeks later i finally get an email saying i wasnt sucessful. they gave it to someone who turned out was pregnant and quit just before she had her baby as she wasnt entitled to maternity pay. i laughed. serves them right! word has it she wants even good at her job lol. their loss!
bloomin annoying! all they have to do is a quick call or email to say thanks but sorry. common courtesy imo!Countdown to Discharge Is On!

I dont know why it happens but it does, you get a promise of a phone call and it doesnt come, why promise to do something if you cant stick to the promise.0

I only had that experience once but it bugged me.
Went for an interview after having many of phone calls from the agency telling me how impressed they were with my qualifications, what conditions I would want etc. Got a phone call on the day of the interview promising to get back to me as soon as they had called the company to find out their decision. Never got a return call.
Luckily got offered an interview two days after the first for a job that I really wanted and got it that day! But it still bugs me that the agency hasn't got the manners to call and let me know. Never considering them again.Save £200 a month : [STRIKE]Oct[/STRIKE] Nov Dec Jan Feb Mar Apr0 -
I once went for a job and the interviewer said she'd call me. She called my home next day but I was at work so she left a message. Apparently she started quite reasonably saying would I call her and then talked herself into a frenzy saying that she couldn't be calling people all day, she was so busy and this was ridiculous and on and on. I don't know whether she was going to offer me the job or not as I decided not to call.0

I completley agree - it is common courtesy for an employer to tell you whether or not you have been successful, when you have made the effort to travel and prepare for an interview. Feedback is vital, especially now when each job is so competitive.
I was told I would receive a phone call Monday and still have not heard anything. It's making me question the professionalism of the company.0 -
yeah you have to then think "do i really want to work for these people when they dont even have the decency to make a quick phone call?"Countdown to Discharge Is On!

Sympathise with you all - went for interview on Friday to place in middle of nowhere - not on bus or train route. Arrived early and they seemed impressed with my interview and knowledge of Company. Said they would get in touch Monday regarding a stage 2 interview???!!!
They did also reveal at interview that the temporary worker and part time worker were also applying for this job (wonder why they revealed that?)!
Few months ago went for an interview and unsuccessful - only two interviewed for job. They couldn't even let me know that I didn't get the job and I work voluntary for a charity that they utilise. You cant take the trousers off an elephant!0 -
You're right OP - it IS very rude, and most unfair on the candidate.
I suppose it could sometimes occur if the interviewers offered the vacancy to their first choice, who then hummed and hawed about whether they actually wanted the job (does happen sometimes - probably not so much these days...). If the first choice then lets the interviewers down, then they have to repeat the process with their second choice...
I completely sympathise though - it's a grim old feeling.
LOTS of luck to you; I hope you find a job that you like - and where the staff are able to behave in a more professional way - very soon. xx0
