Get it checked very soon. The risk is small if there is only a slight smell but gas could build up in an enclosed larder. I suggest that you leave the door to the larder open to help the gas disperse but I am not an expert and this advice might be wrong so call the number in the post above.

Can you temporarily wrap some duck tape or similar around the leaking joint?

Remember you are paying for gas leaking from the consumer side of the meter.
  • We had to call Transco out on the day we moved into our new house as the gas man called (don't give you a minute do they, we'd barely unpacked) to read the meter and could smell gas in the cupboard.
Turned out to be a slight leak on 'their' side so they dug 3 bloody big holes in my front garden and 2 in the road. God knows what my new neighbours must have thought, and what a nightmare for Day 1.
Just a cautionary tale really, if you're gonna call them, wait til all your Xmas visitors have gone!
Incidentally, they did arrive within 20 minutes of the call and were very nice people.

Thought i'd post back an update:-

I phoned Transco earlier today and was instructed to turn the gas off until their engineer came out. A guy arrived 20 minutes later and after using his leak detector came to the same conclusion I did - that a slight leak of gas was coming from the test point. As well as having had a new boiler a few months ago, we recently had a gas hob installed (though i couldnt remember if the smell of gas was there before then or not) so the transco man reckons that the gas fitter had been too heavy handed putting the test point screw back and damaged it. In the end Transco replaced the meter. All done within an hour of my phone call...impressive service! I'm not so impressed by the kitchen fitters with the catalogue of problems we've had with them but that's a much longer story - to sum it up i'd never use any DIY store installation service who subcontract out to Multi-Assistance ever again - even if they paid me!
