That seems to be the real problem - that people don't know how and when to use the Search function

I think that's the nature of forums generally. But in the grand scheme of life maybe it's not such a big problem?

Seems like a perfectly reasonable question to me. Things change on a forum - what was deemed suitable a few months ago might not feel so suitable now.

Nobody is obliged to respond on threads if they don't wish to.

Feels like some posters cannot win on here - if you do search for a similar thread and then post on that thread, you are then told that "You shouldn't be hijacking another poster's thread. Start your own thread".

And then when you do that (as instructed by the thread monitors), be prepared to be told that you must be too thick to use the Search function. :D

I don't think anyone has suggested that it's not a reasonable question - it's merely been pointed out that it's one that has been raised before.

Indeed they do, but it's probably only a fortnight since the question was last raised. If and when MSE admin decide it would be more suitabke for the boards to be further split then I'm sure they'll proceed with it. As G_M and another poster have suggested (presumably TIC) we could call for the board to be further split down in all sorts of ways........

Equally, those who do want to respond are free to do so, even where their viewpoint differs from that of others. :) You could carry your comment onto it's logical conclusion, ie that no-one is obliged to read any threads on the board that are outwith their area of personal interest.

It's not hard Catblue - *read* one thread and *then* perhaps start your own if you have a query that hasn't been answered? Most posters, rather more gently than you suggest, merely point out that a thread can become hard to follow if there are several different posters in the one thread, all wanting answers to their own specific point.

As a tenant I only look at posts relating to renting. So for me separate forums would be better.
    It's someone else's fault.

As an academic exercise I've just been searching for similar discussions.

Eventually - after about 10 searches - I found one. I searched various combinations under terms like "sub forum" "sub board" "buying" "selling" "renting" "landlords" etc., before finally finding it.

Many people would not have that much patience.

My point is, it's not always that easy to find old discussions when there are a) so many threads on the board, and b) you don't know in advance exactly what terminology someone has used to describe a particular issue.

Just a thought  but maybe if someone is aware of a suitable existing thread it would be more constructive to point people in that direction rather than whinging about how people are too dumb to "know how and when to use the Search function". Hardly in the spirit of the forum, is it?

Let the less experienced forum members benefit from your wisdom rather than slamming them!

    I'm not, no.

However, your reply to me demonstrates precisely what I was talking about. Thanks. :)

"separate boards" as a search term will bring up a number of threads dating back quite a way.:)

....so...ahem.... "don't know how and when to use the search function"....

Referring to other posters comments as "whinging" because

    (a) their viewpoint differs to your own, and
    (b) you personally have drawn an incorrect inference

is outwith "the spirit of a forum" Check back - I did not use the term "too dumb" (your phrasing) or "too thick" (Catblue's phrasing). If someone doesn't know how to do something it means that they have yet to learn. This site *can* be confusing, particularly to newcomers and I have previously suggested that the "search" functions aren't that easy.

Bit of "wisdom" for you - always check your own understanding of another poster's comments before misinterpreting and getting het up :)

It seems like the renting-type threads have taken over the board a bit recently - but I think it's probably a reflection of the housing market at the moment, there are so few sales going through that there aren't many buying/selling threads being started. When/if things pick up a bit, the balance should shift back again.

To me there is still validity in the suggestion of a split between buying/selling and renting/letting.... in the same way that house price discussions were split off... even though that subject occasionally strays back here from time to time! :D
If you feel my comments are helpful then I'd love it if you 'Thanked' me! :)

So what you're saying is that once the person knows the precise search term they won't have a problem putting it in the box and hitting the search button? Of course if they don't know the precise term ...

Referring to other posters comments as "whinging" because

Hmmm, ok, be objective - the implications of your comment were hardly kind. You were unhappy that someone was too [choose adjective (see below)] to do the correct, quite specific search, etc.

Maybe there's a less emotive term for it than whinging - happy to go with that.

And I would never say someone was whinging just because their opinion differed from mine ... please!

Check back - I did not use the term "too dumb" (your phrasing) or "too thick" (Catblue's phrasing).
True, but the inference is there, whichever adjective one chooses.

Bit of "wisdom" for you - always check your own understanding of another poster's comments before misinterpreting and getting het up :)
Something suitably patronising to finish with. Awesome!
