Newbie - Opening a bank account

Hi,

A few newbie questions:

Can I deposit a large cash lumpsum or a check into a bank account on the day that I have it opened?

What do I need to bring with me to open a new bank account at a new bank?

I'm changing my house address in less than 30 days, can I have the bank ensure that they do not post anything to my current (soon-to-be old) address?

Many Thanks! :)

I've just moved to the UK from Switerzland, so please forgive my English and forgive me if I asking stupid questions!

PS: My current address is in the UK.

At the moment I'm looking at RBS! Do you mean that I can insert money into the account at the same time that it is opened, within the hour?

Do you understand what I mean?

    Thanks :)

Yes, you can do both as long as your account has been approved and opened :)

Cash goes in straight away, whilst cheques will take 7 working days to fully clear - longer if it's a foreign draft (usually a couple of weeks).

Cards & PINs should be with you within a week, but I would register for online banking and turn off paper statements for the time being until you get your address sorted.
Anything that I do say, is strictly my opinion :p

I understand, thanks! I will certainly turn off "paper statements" ASAP, and hopefully they can do this on the same day that I open the account.

Is there a way of "circumventing" having my card and PIN sent to my address? I've had problems here in the UK with other people intercepting my postal mail.

Your new card will be with you in 3-5 days. If you're moving house in 2+ weeks I wouldn't worry about this. If it's a concern the RBS branch can arrange to have you card and PIN ordered 'back to branch' which means you can personally collect it if you take ID.

You can't get onto online banking before you get your Visa debit card though as soon as you're on you can turn off paper statements.
