Daughter's Student Flat. Unsafe bathroom light problem?

My daughter and her friend have just taken on a student flat.
I didn't get the chance to view it with them on their first visit, but did go and view it today.
Everything seems fine apart from the bathroom light. I am worried it is a potential hazard. Basically the light fitment is within the shower area over the bath. The light bulb is being held out of the shower area with a piece of string attached to the ceiling. I've included a photo so you can see what I mean.
Is this allowed in a rental property?

Oh dear... I wouldn't be too pleased about that. I'd definitely contact the landlord about it, though you might have to badger them a bit :)

It seems a bit stupid and dangerous!! Surely they should have an enclosed light fitting?!

Looks dangerous to me too. Definitely ask for a suitable light fitting to be installed (they are rated according to what area of the bathroom they are suitable for).

    very unacceptable.

it's not even a Home Office Skirt on the lampholder which was needed back in the 1970s.

Whoever installed the electric shower should have changed the light fitting as well, so it would be worth checking whether the shower is safe or not.

That definitely needs changing! It shouldn't be 230v either in that zone. Zone 1 should be safety extra low voltage (SELV), with the 230v transformer located in zone 3 as a minimum (or attic).

Check the shower is also protected via a RCD too!

Pretty much as above the shower looks relatively new, whomever fitted it should have made sure it had the latest RCD safety device and the correctly rated cable. Last of all they would have been obliged to change that light fitting to a bathroom zoned enclosed fitting.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm going to contact the landlord tomorrow and ask her to change it. Hopefully she will agree.
I will also check that the shower is rcd protected.

I'm a bit confused as to whether they have to have a periodic electric certificate or not. I know they have to have a gas one which seems to be ok but I haven't seen an electric one yet.
