Using mobile abroad

I have recently returned from being on holiday and was mighty jealous of my DS browsing online in the free wi-fi part of the hotel with his ipod.

Despite having a smart phone I'm not sure if I can browse the net for free when using free wi-fi abroad and didn't want to risk a huge bill when I returned home.

It's a Samsung Galaxy from Tesco if it makes any difference, can anyone advise if it's free to browse abroad on wi-fi?

Thanks

Yes absolutly free to use wifi on your phone anywhere in the world as its independant to your sim, the only charge you would incur would be if the wifi access point needed to be paid for.

Personally if I get a 3G tab I intend to take the sim out if I want to surf on wifi, that way there is no way charges can be levied.

Wifi is seperate to your SIM/Tesco account as mentioned so you can turn on wifi, search for the free hotspots offered in many places (McDonalds, many airports etc) and surf abroad.

BUT you must make sure your phone doesn't try and use data via a cellular network provider while abroad as that's when huge bills crop up! (using google maps, youtube, facebook or emailing etc) Many phones have the ability to disable data roaming so there's no chance of accidentally using data abroad and getting a massive bill.....it's really important to know how to do this.

I go one step further and in my Android phone setup there's the APN data settings for my provider (tells the phone who and what to connect to for cellular data such as Vodafone, 3, Tesco etc) and I have added a second 'no data' APN data setting that I can select and there are no connection settings in that option so if I am abroad I select the 'no data' provider safe in the knowledge that if my phone tries to use data, it won't be able to connect to anything.
