help with uneven floor

I hope someone can help, my dining room floor is uneven it dips down gradually from the doorway and the carpet has stretched and now has wrinkles in it and needs replacing, this is something I'm going to have to save up to replace and don't want the same thing happening again. Someone suggested that the floor needs self leveling compund on it but how easy is this to do myself and how long does it need to be left before I can lay carpet

Self leveling compound is what it says on the tin and is easy to use, normaly mix it with water and cover the area its required for then roughly even out with a straight edge ( flat bit of wood ) and let it set over night and re lay the carpet !

Are all the door bases at the same height? If the whole room is on a slope, self-levelling compound used blindly will not help.

Bear in mind self-levelling compound will basically level the whole room- so it's level with zero incline. Many rooms have a tiny slope on them- this will remove that slope.

Concrete floor or suspended wooden floor?

    How much of a slope?

Got a pic of the offending?

    Cheers

Sorry couldn't get a pic that adequately shows the problem but I've just measured it with a level and the difference between the high and low point is approx 8mm

You can feather in some self leveller, but if the dip is extreme and has stretched the carpet since it was fitted, then you need to determine the cause, and not just level it off if it may continue to sink

Thanks but we still don't actually know what type of floor it is as asked above. Concrete, timber, ???

    Cheers
