Told my in-laws about our debt

I've lived with debt since the age of 16 but it only spiralled out of control around 1999/2000. BUT, the only people I answer to are my OH & to a lesser extent, my children, (17, 15 & 13). I've not told parents or anyone of our true mess & I refuse to spend my time justifying not so sensible purchases to anyone but my wife. Together, we are getting straight but if I fall off the DFW wagon occassionally, then so be it.Donedoingdebt Lightbulb moment January 2000. Debt at highest approx £102,000. Well done, it'll probably suprise you how many are in the same situation, but it's nothing to be ashamed or scared about, there are ways of dealing with it and you are making the first steps. My sister and I also only buy presents for the children and only what we can afford, we know what it's like to live beyond means and why buy something she will probably never use! I am pleased you have got someone close to talk to, of course not pleased that another person is struggling but I think you understand what I mean. Hopefully you can support each other and they were probably relieved that you mentioned it first. Looks and opinions can always be deceptive, just because someone flashes the cash doesn't mean they are not in masses of debt.
Hope you all have a happy Christmas, and that the pressure has been relieved a little. Best wishes. One day I might be more organised...........

Very well done - first for starting to come to terms with your own situation, and realising that you are not alone. Secondly for having the strength to 'come clean' to your relations - you have probably put their minds at ease as much as your own.
I wonder how many other people were giving out presents, yesterday, purely because that is what is expected, knowing that it was damaging their financial situation.
It sometimes only takes a minute to change your life for the better - your Brother in Law respects you for your honesty and it sounds as if they were as relieved as you when it was all out in the open.
I hope you had a great Christmas Day and are looking forward to a fresh start in the New Year.I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.
If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.
