Ive seen this a few times but not very often, usualy when a machines crashed or been shut down mid update I also seem to remember something about a bug in adobe but that was years ago.
as you've said above you have tried safe boot,
have you tried last known good configuration?
if not id recommend booting from your install disk and trying either a repair or restoring from an earlier safe point0 -
thanks...there does not seem to be a a 'good configuration...it goes back to blue update loop screen...aghhhh
i think the machine was shut down mid update (it sounds about right )
...it is owned by an amazingly un-techie 16yr old(i thought all 16yr olds were computer whizzes these days)... this is the 4th time he has destroyed this computer...fried the hard drive...managed to amass over 400 virusus on another occasion...blue screen of death ..and on it goes...now this...i have cleaned and secured it on numerous occasions, but he has no thought or care in doing regular virus scans or maintainance...soooo here we are again...
the only answer seems to be to boot from a rescue disc which we do not have ...tried downloading 2 but neither worked0 -
I'll see if I can find you a working link to a Windows 7 recovery disk tomorrow.
Alternatively, if the working computer you're using is Windows 7, you can make one yourself:

just noticed it is running windows vista premium....!!
i was presuming 7 as it is a fairly new laptop..
right so now i want a recovery disc for vista..aghh0 -
Oh okay, well I might have one definitely safe one, so will try to get you that later this evening. Will give instructions just in case the ones you tried today weren't burnt correctly (need to be burnt as an image).
Makes more sense that it's Vista; that was certainly my experience of it. Really was as bad as people made out.0 -
yea kids know how to use computers better than most generations but 90% of them are so un savvy its untrue, billions of toolbars, click yes to everything dont care about security etc! I think your only options are either a repair, restore or format0
