Advice on extra income Please

Options
Hi all,

I recently run itno abit of finance trouble and I'd like to gain some extra income to assist in paying off my debts.

I currently work full time 09:00-5:30 Monday to Friday doing IT support, it then takes me until about 6:15-6:30 until im home.

basically I want advice on what you guys think would be the best extra earner for me, I mean I could do freelance IT support but I dont have a client base or money to fund some advertising. I'm pretty much willing to so anything (bar medical experiments) but the more money the better, I've seen the old fill in a survey get a £1 things before but id idealy like to make more money than that!!!
any advice or help or suggestions would be great! thanks guys!

  • Well I've got over 5 years of working In IT support so I’m good with people, over the phone and in person and good with technology. I've never really done sales but I’m willing to give it ago! I am a quick learner, think you have to be in this industry!

I’m open to suggestions really, I’m not looking for my own businesses just a secondary income stream while times are hard so its not really a long term thing (I hope)

  • true that mate, i should be on about 4-5k more than what im on now but the economy is just stupid at the moment! do you know any advanced web dev stuff like PHP/mySQL or ASP ? if so you could do some freelance development maybe? but again i guess you might be in the same boat as me in that you dont have a personal client base

I guess it will totally depend on how much you need extra per week/month.
I take it you have already looked at how to make the money you currently have work better for you so you need to really work out how much time you have available to take on any extra work.
I say this because for years I was always looking at increasing my income, I work a well paid, quite stressful, job in a large company but it's 35 hours and desk based so I worked evenings stocking shelves at tesco. It was good for a while, the extra money helped but I still felt it wasn't enough. Eventually, although not entirely related, I took bad and collapsed with multiple cvst and a pe (clots in my brain and lung). I had also lost track of what was important, having time with my family and relaxing.
Now, I still would like extra income but I am a lot more careful with the money I have.
I have dropped a brand level at the supermarket, I budget my money so I have a set amount each week, etc, all things I've picked up from trawling these forums.
So if you have looked at your money and are using it to it's best, I guess the next steps could be:
clearing out all your clutter at car boots/ebay/gumtree then using this money to source new goods to sell
using your skills to teach others (adult classes at community centres) - the hire prices are reasonable (£10/£15 per hour) and you can take the entrance money
offering your services as an odd job man - with summer here there is a lot of gardens need sorting, you only need a few basic tools, flyers can be easily made on a pc and printed at home (or work if you're employers are relaxed) and if you work your local streets it can become a good little earner.
If it is IT support, it is a very saturated market and even more difficult out of core business hours, but you could market your services in local shops, free papers etc.
One thing I would suggest is getting a free sim and using an old phone for the extra work. This means you can record a voice mail and have the phone turned off while at work and use it as a message machine. It really helps and it avoids spam to your main number.
Anyway, these are just a couple of ideas, there's hundreds more on this site.

    Good luck

  • hi cagneuk, really sorry to hear about what happend to you, I Hope you have recoverd! the adult class thing could be a really good idea, I mean working in IT im often trying to teach up staff as it makes my life easier. I dont really have alot of junk laying around my house to be honest im pretty minimalist and very rarely treat myself (even though I have a wish list about as big as my arm ;) ). but thanks for the ideas, what id really love to make is like £200~ a month I know that alot of people do web based surveys research etc on here which is something id be interested in.

£200 per month. Ok so it's a challenge but not a huge amount. Car boots could easily make this but if you've no stock and you're not a natural salesperson it might be tough. I'd say if you've not been to one recently, go to a local one and check out what other people are selling, what thier prices are and more importantly what people are buying form them. For the sake of a couple of quid entry it gives some great insights.
A friend of mine scavenges, he calls it recycling, goes round the estates, looking in skips etc then sells on what he finds. He does quite well out of it.
Adult classes in basic computer skills, creating effective cv's, using the internet, setting up emails etc can be good but it would depend on the equipment that is available and who your local competition is.
web based surveys, I've never really seen the value in these, yes they make you money but, for me, when I considered doing them, I found there wasn't enough to even bring in minimum wage and for £50 per week you would need to be completing a lot of surveys and this would take up a lot of time and there is no guarantees that they would be there week after week.
I found shelf stacking quite relaxing actually, I worked the shifts no-one else wanted thursday friday and saturday evenings 4 hours per night. the tesco was 24 so my 12 hours was easy to achieve and brought in around what your looking for.
Failing that, bar work is good for chatting to people, also a way to meet prospective IT clients.
I know this sounds daft but if your an early bird, get down to your local pubs, theres often money just lying around where people have dropped it getting into taxis.

    Hi all :)
Cleaning? Party plan? Network marketing? Handy person? Health and care?
The reasons I suggest these are that they are some of the easiest options to look at and attain :)
    Good luck :)
