Problem with iphone 4

I can't seem to update my apps on my iphone 4. When I press the 'update al'l button nothing happens.
So I plugged it into my pc in case my software isnt up to date on it.
This just said itunes cannot read the contents of the iphone. Go to the sumamry tab in iphone preferences and click restore to restore this iphone to factorty settings.
I don't want to restore to factory settings in case I lose my photos which aren't backed up anywhere yet. Does restoring it mean I lose my photos?
Has anyone had the same problems and any solutions to it?
Many thanks

    Hi

Ive had this problem before. Try the following steps.

1 - To backup photos on the phone, connect iPhone to PC. Go to windows explorer ?(click on 'My Computer') and your iPhone should be there. Double click and it'll say something about remaining memory. Double click on this and there should be a folder called 'DCIM'. Within this folder is another folder made of random letters and numbers. Inside this folder should be all your pictures. Check to make sure all the pics are there, go back and copy the 'DCIM' folder to your desktop.

2 - With your iPhone still connected go to iTunes. Right click on your iPhone in iTunes and select 'Back Up'. This will back up all the important info(incl. contacts, messages, etc). Once backed up log out of itunes and remove unconnect your iPhone. Connect your iPhone and log back in to iTunes. Right click on your iPhone and this time select 'Rest Warnings'. Now try updating the apps. This worked for me. If it doesnt work try restoring . All your data and photos are backed up.

Thanks a lot. I managed to do this.
However, the videos clips I had on my iphone which are now in the DCIM folder on my desktop won't actually play.
    How do I fix that?

Forgot to say if anyone is interested as they may have this problem - I couldn't update my apps because I had low memory due to having a huge amount of videos and photos on my iphone.
Once I reduced them the apps updated ok.
The problem with synchronising my iphone was that i tunes had disappeared on my desktop so once i downloaded it then it was able to recognise my iphone but i did have to get it to restore it to factory settings. Interestingly to me that did not cause my photos to disappear but did cause my e-mails on my iphoen to disappear. Fortunately I'd backed them all up as suggested.
