thanks for the info we have been on hold at the tax office for 40 mins and now she has to go to work. surely her current employer - Pizza hut should have known about the P46 ????
 Money Saving Newbie but learning
  • Hi, yes she should have been advised to fill in a P46 but in my experience with big companies things like this are normally dealt with at store level and as she had handed in a P45 to the manager this would not have been necessary. It would be the managers fault for not sending her P45 to HR. She should ask the new manager or whoever is in charge for a P46 now. There is no time limit as to when she can fill this in. She should also ask for a P46 to fill in at her new job.

The above would only apply if she is working in these jobs all year round. If they are only holiday jobs (ie no term time working) there is also a P38 that students can complete if working for a limited amount of weeks which means that they do not pay tax as the short time worked means that they would earn less than the normal tax free allowance of £7475. This is a legal declaration and is also dealt with by employers.
Sometimes it seems that just when I think I have reached rock bottom, someone hands me a shovel.

As per the other posters, if you earn £500 a month in your second job you'll pay £125 a month in tax from this. So you'd be £375 a month better off.
However, remember that if you receive tax credits then these may go down, too.

This sounds right if it was your second job. But given that this weekly earnings is more than half your total weekly earnings this sounds more like your "first" job. I'd suggest phoning the tax office.

looks like you got your sums wrong, 20% of £500 is only £100 so the op will pick up £400 after tax, not sure about ni though;)

You are absolutely right. I was doing 25% tax. Why, I don't know!
