I believe you'd pay basic rate tax on the second job as you'd have used up all your allowance on the first, so 20%. You'd have to complete a tax return too, which can confuse your tax situation for a while.

    yup, 20% tax (no NI).
  • AFAIK as above you will pay 20% tax on your total second job earnings and if you earn over £139 per week in your second job you will also pay 12% NI on anything you earn over this amount. Both jobs are rated separately for NI purposes.
Sometimes it seems that just when I think I have reached rock bottom, someone hands me a shovel.

    Sorry to butt in.

I have two part time jobs. I work a total of 27 hrs a week @ £6. I got my first pay slip from one of the jobs last week and i paid £21.40 tax on basic earnings of £107.92. My tax code says 0 T. Is that some kind of emergency tax?. If so roughly how long does it take them to sort this out.

Usually 3 to 4 weeks depending on the tax office. You should get a refund the week its sorted. You will pay tax on all the amount on the second job as you're not using your full tax free allowance on the first so you'll probably pay too much over the year and have to put in for a refund after 5th April using a P50.
  • Hi
not sure if this is the right place to put this but here goes.....my daughter is 18 and a student she left PT work due to the contract ending and got a P45 which she gave to her new employer when she got a new PT job after 6 months of trying!
She has been on Tax code BR since starting it turns out the manager never gave her P45 into the wages office and he has now left.
What should we do to sort this? to complicate matters the hours are not very regular at this job so she has managed to get another PT job in a shop so where does she stand with paying tax on this job?
    thanks

This sounds more like the tax deducted if you have failed to hand in a P45 or complete a P46. What is your code in the other job?

What would normally happen is that your tax allowance goes to your main job and you pay basic rate ie 20% tax on the other job; but in your case this will result in paying to mutch tax. You should contact the tax office to get your tax code split between your employers.

Your daughter needs to fill in a P46 for each of her part time jobs. Her tax code will eventually be split between the 2 jobs, once both employers and the tax office have sorted it out.

As per the other posters, if you earn £500 a month in your second job you'll pay [STRIKE]£125[/STRIKE] £100 a month in tax from this. So you'd be [STRIKE]£375[/STRIKE] £400 a month better off.
However, remember that if you receive tax credits then these may go down, too.

This sounds right if it was your second job. But given that this weekly earnings is more than half your total weekly earnings this sounds more like your "first" job. I'd suggest phoning the tax office.
