john lewis wool shrank despite washing instructions followed, what can I do?

I treated myself to some alpaca/silk wool from John Lewis and spent ages knitting a jumper out of it. When I washed it, it shrank! I followed the instructions and they are saying I didn't and won't help, offer refund or anything.
I've been knitting for over 35 years (and as I've got a family seem to spend every day washing so I know my way round a pile of laundry) so I can't understand why they are blaming me? If I bought a garment in the shops and washed it according to the instructions and it shrank, I would surely have redress. This is even worse due to the time spent knitting it.
Does anyone have any idea what I can do? I feel sick as I spent so much money (and time) on it.
Thanks

have you gone straight to the top now? central customer services
also do you have any of the yarn left and wool bands?
if so one suggestion I would have its to knit up to tensions squares one for you and one for them and wash one in accordance with the instructions that you already followed and see what happens again maybe take a before and after picture?Baby Milk Action is a non-profit organisation which aims to save lives and to end the avoidable suffering caused by inappropriate infant feeding.0 -
