Grant of probate

Has anyone had any experience of "grant of probate"? If so, how long did it take from applying to being sent back? Apparently the sellers solicitor sent it off a week ago Friday (15th Dec) - obviously, we won't hear anything until new year, but I was just wondering if anyone knows how long its likely to take.

it depends on the size and complexity of the estate.

Small estates between 3 to 4 months, more complex - where there is a property to market and sell can take around 6 to 9 months, and where there is a large and complex estate where there may be difficulties arising (such as locating beneficiaries who would take under a Will or where a Will is contested, etc) it can take anything up to (or even beyond) 12 months.
  • Small estates 3 to 4 months - you're having a laugh ain't you?!?
Should take no more than 3 weeks or so if that.

we lost a house because someone in the chain was waiting for probate which should have been granted in January, then February, then April.....then the chain collapsed.

i did the probate myself on a relatives death. The probate form is very easy to complete - it is a list of debts and a list of assets of the deceased person. if the number of inheritors/bequeasts are simple, it should not take more than a few hours to fill in the form !!!!
  • Following my father's recent death, I need to complete some forms to apply for Probate. When I rang the helpline for the forms, I was told that, following the forms being submitted, it takes around six weeks.

i had to apply for a Grant after my dad died in July. We applied in October, got the interview 2 weeks' later, and a week after that, it arrived in the post! I think it depends on the value of the estate??
  • We bought a house that was on probabte. Probate part took about 4-5 weeks. As long as the will is clear cut and straight forward then it shouldn't take long at all.
  • If I remember rightly I wrote off for a form, filled it in,
took it to the appropriate office, swore an oath and was granted probate.
    It was quite simple.
There was a will and the total value of the estate was more than 10% less than the Nil Rate Band.
