no earth in fuse box

Hi
I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this but was wondering if anyone could help.
We bought our house 3and a half years ago and needed a new cooker. The last built cooker was just plugged in and there was no wire for the new one to be wired in to the fuse box. The electrician we had to wire it in, noticed there was no earth in the fuse box (which I know we were very lucky things have been ok) is there anything we can do about this or has it been too long now since we bought the house?
Thanks for any advice
Debbie

I'm no expert but I think your going to have to get it done yourself.
I think its a case of...its your house, your problem.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
Of course, I'm happy to be corrected. You have been reading.....another magnificent post by garethgas :beer:0 -
How old is the house?
Is it mentioned anywhere in the property paperwork that this work is needed?
Or indeed, if you bought it via an estate agent, was it mentioned there?
My initial feeling is that you will have to bear the brunt of this - not nice I know, as it isn't something you can check/spot unless you are an electrician, or know what you are looking for.0 -
You may well find that although there isn't an earth wire in the consumer unit itself, there may be an earth terminal block somewhere nearby that is connected to an earthing rod.
Can you see any large cables that have a yellow and green sleeve in the area of the consumer unit? If so, see if you can trace where they are going and you might find the rod.0 -
Hi thanks for all your replies.
There is an old fuse box in the cupboard which had an earth running to it, but seemingly the new fuse box fitted before we bought the house had no earth to it.
The electrician we had put an earth in to the fuse box, it's worrying to think we have lived here for over 3 years and it was unsafe.
There was nothing mentioned in the survey or by the estate agents I think it has went unnoticed.
I think the previous owners has tried to carry out alot of work on their own as it looked good when we were buying it but it's not till your living in the property you notice all the faults.
We have a double socket in the bedroom that even when switched off the applaince plugged in to it still works.
The dimmer switch in the kitchen something behind it was burnt out as it was the wrong voltage????? the kitchen lights which are spotlights are just running off a normal switch just now.
Thanks Debbie0 -
Sounds like you need an electrician to check the remaining stuff is up to reasonable code IMHO0
