Hi All,

I have a Whirlpool ACM702/NE induction hob and, using my new Owl electricity monitor have found that it is using almost 100w of power when in stand-by or 'off' mode!!

Does anyone know if this is 'normal'!

Don't believe any reading on the Owl below around 200 watts.

Ok, I see where you are coming from however, when I switch off the hob, the Owl drops by 100w which is by far the highest draw device that I have tried (including fridge freezer etc.) so, while the 100w may not be completely accurate, the hob is still pulling more power in stand-by than any of my other appliances do when live....

    Surely that can't be right.

I suspect its picking up out of phase current that won't be registered by your electricity meter.
IIRC this can happen with inverter power supplies.

The laws of physics state that you cannot destroy energy.

Therefore if your hob was drawing 100watts it could only be dissipated as heat.

100 watts is a lot of heat - feel how hot a 40 watt bulb gets.

So if it was drawing 100 watts, not only would it be faulty but you would most certainly feel the heat.
