No gas coming through meter
I have just purchased my first house and called to get the utilities in my name but have a problem with the gas. The meter is the old bog standard non-prepay type. I have moved the lever from horizontal to vertical so that it is in line with supply pipe but still have no gas at all coming through.
I called my supplier (British Gas) and explained the issue - the bloke sounded totally perplexed and ended up advising me to call the gas emergency number. I would rather not do that as it seems a bit stupid.
I think the person who owned the house before me was not one for paying bills (judging by the court summons in the old post) so I may have been cut off externally.
Does any one have any better advise than phoning up and pretending I have a leak. My gas board in Northern Gas so maybe it would be best to call them...
Cheers

Probably blanked off at the valve.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0

as suggested call the emergency number. They will be there within 1 hour, they're qualified experts and free.0

call emergencys they are their for no gas situations, it may however have a cap on the inlet. If cutting off for debt the normaly just remove the meter as cutting off at the road costs a lotDon't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0

no gas coming to the meter could be because of a gas leak.... or as other posters the supply could be capped off.
Transco will be able to tell. Cheapest option to start with.
Did the vendor advise of any problems with the gas???Promo codes are never always cheaper..... isnt that right EuropCar?0 -
transco does not exist,
If the property is rented then call your landlord to arrange for a gas safe engineer to attend to check first, the gas emergency service does not usually attend if you have not used gas in the property as you need to have checked that it has not been capped first. Once that is physically done by either your suppliers engineer or a gas safe and once you have eliminated a appliance problem if only one appliance ie a boiler by restarting it, or getting a gas safe engineer to check then call the gas emergency service - you will be asked all this by the agent there or me if you get me as I work there ,I am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.0 -
If it has been cut off in the street and you as you say you are in northern gas networks area then yes op they are the people to call as you will require a new service to be put in. Or it could be off supply if the property was empty during mains replacement works again Northern gas networks would advise on that if their areaI am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.0
