How long did you wait for your mobility car ?

Hi this year i have decided to use my mobility part of my dla to get a mobility car. After calling round many showrooms the time scales have varied big time from one week at mini/bmw to 14/16 week at Nissan.
How long did you have to wait for your new car, i understand if you need it to be adapted it can take much longer but if like me i do not need any adaptations how long did you have to wait ?

We have been quoted 8-10 weeks for a our Vauxall Insignia but friends who looked at the same car at a different dealership were quoted 12 weeks! Apparently all depends what you're after and how popular it is. Good luck and hope it doesn't take too long;)

We waited about 12 weeks for ours which didn't have any adaptations but was built to order.

  • I think mine was about 8 weeks maybe just shy of that.

I normally buy new cars but I have had one motability car and since it was top of the range with all the bells and whistles it was made to order and took four months but thats not bad when compared to my other new car orders.

All my cars have to be auto with hand controls and my current car is a highly specialised vehicle which take over a year go build.

As others have intimated, it can vary.

For example, if your chosen car is available in dealer or group stock, then it can be a relatively quick process, possibly a week or so. So it can be worth asking your dealer if they do have any in stock across their group, particularly if you are not too bothered about colour, spec, optional extras etc.

However if the dealer does not have your chosen car in stock and there are no others already built waiting at the factory compound, then it will be a new build which can take anything upto six months, sometimes even longer. Also if you spec a lot of optional extras, the chances are it will have to be a new build. Also automatic cars do tend to be new factory builds.

As the lease on my current car was due to expire on 30th June, I placed the order for my new one (a Renault Clio ST Auto) on 31st March - giving them the maximum amount of time possible to get the car delivered. However, my original order was held up because the colour I'd ordered was no longer available (they told me 2 weeks after the order had been confirmed), so the process had to be started again mid April. Currently I've been given a provisional date of 16th August, which would be 19 weeks from order, but I'm assuming there may well be a further delay.

As motability are happy to extend my current lease for up to 6 months in this eventuality, I've no problem with this - in fact I love my current car, and would happily have kept it another 3 years, given the choice. But I know that is an annoyance for anyone moving to motability for the first time.

To be fair, the manufacturers have all cut back on the stocks they hold, because they were not selling in the economic downturn. We have all heard the old stories of folk buying 'new' cars, only to find they were 6 months or a year old, and had been standing in a field as unsold stock for that time. Furthermore, any manufacturers that use components which are manufactured in Japan are likely to suffer significant delays following the earthquake earlier in the year - so Nissan will definately have problems (even the cars built in Britain are made from components manufactured in Japan), and this is likely to be affecting Renault too - they are now part of the same group, and my guess is that these days they share quite a lot of parts.

I hope your car isn't held up too long tho'.
I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say. :)

I have a Nissan Note Tekna - my second. Both times it has taken just one week.

I don't need any adaptations and I was advised at time of ordering what colours were available quickly - if my chosen colour hadn't been available, it would have taken longer. I went in with an open mind and three colour choices though. The only colours I really didn't want were white or silver. I was fortunate that both times, group stock was available.

If I had wanted a Citroen, waiting time was eight months. The garage actually told me not to consider them in case it took longer.

My friend has a Ford modus, which was at the garage she visited. She just had to wait for the paperwork (HRM was re-awarded after a tribunal).
